In Loving Memory of Uncle Joe
Uncle Joe was a larger-than-life character whose presence will forever be etched in our hearts. One of my earliest memories of him dates back to when I was a young adult, during a family Christmas gathering at my parents' house. I remember walking down the stairs, feeling the excitement of the holiday season, and being greeted by Uncle Joe in his signature, boisterous way. With a warm smile and his familiar Italian slang, he gushed about how pretty I looked, especially that day when I wore a hat and dressed up. His comments, filled with affection, always had a way of making me feel seen and loved,
Uncle Joe, alongside Aunt Muriel, was also my godfather, and I will always cherish the special bond we shared. I have vivid memories of the thoughtful gifts they gave me. I remember the love and joy that radiated from both of them.
As a child, I remember the annual pool parties they hosted at their house on Cherry Street. Those days were filled with laughter, joy, and the warmth of family. Aunt Muriel’s home was a haven, a place of beauty and creativity. Her unique sense of design was always something I admired, and I remember the comfort and sense of belonging I felt whenever I visited.I also remember they were the first of anyone I knew to have a microwave.
Uncle Joe and Aunt Muriel also introduced me to the world of upholstery. I tried my hand at working in their shop for a brief time, and though I quickly realized how hard the work truly was, they were kind enough to let me try, showing me a patience and generosity that spoke volumes about their character. Even as I gave up, I appreciated their willingness to share their craft with me.
The stories my parents shared of their younger years, owning a shoe store, and enjoying life together as couples have always stayed with me. Those stories of laughter, hard work, and love were the foundation of the strong, enduring friendship between our families.
Uncle Joe was known for his boisterous, sometimes humorous complaints, always delivered with that unmistakable flair of his. Whether he was playfully grumbling about something or offering a tongue-in-cheek critique, his comments never failed to bring a smile to our faces. Though his humor could be sharp, it was always delivered with such a genuine, larger-than-life energy that we couldn’t help but love him for it. He had a way of turning the most ordinary situations into moments of laughter, and that’s something we’ll all carry with us. And of course, as I remember, he was sometimes with a toothpick in his mouth, a small detail that became as much a part of his presence as his playful banter. We all knew that underneath those playful complaints was a heart full of love, and his spirit will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Uncle Joe. We love you and miss you more than words can express.
