Obituary of Janet Catherine Malcomson
Janet Catherine Malcomson (nee Lucin)
October 10, 1948 to November 14, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Malcomson, beloved Mom, Nana, wife, sister, friend, and teacher, who passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, at the age of 76. Janet’s death marks the end of a life marked by grace, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those she loved.
Janet is survived by her devoted daughters, Carrie (Geoff) MacGillivray and Melanie (Andrew Santorelli) Malcomson, her beloved granddaughters Holly, Sarah, and Madeline. Additionally, her family mourns her loss including Margie (Les) Mitro, Ken (Candace) Lucin, Doug (Karen) Lucin, Mary (Terry) White, Tom (Peg) Malcomson, Jim Price, Robert (late Irene) Downey as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband (Robert), her parents (Anthony and Catherine Lucin), and her cherished sister (Carole Price).
Born on October 10, 1948, Janet grew up in a full house in west St. Catharines. Her quiet yet inquisitive nature led her to a life-long career as an elementary school teacher - a profession that suited her dedication to learning, sharing knowledge, and inspiring young children in and outside the classroom. She was dedicated to encouraging a love of reading but also ensuring all her students learned to write in cursive - modeled by her impeccable and beautiful long hand. The impact she had is evident today where former students would stop her in the most random places to thank her for the impact she’d had on them. Janet spent 37 wonderful years building a beautiful life, going on adventures, and raising her two girls together with her doting husband, Bob.
Janet’s community of friends was as broad as it was deep. She cherished her friends deeply - some of them having known her for more than 60 years. This circle of friends especially supported her during the last 15 years, and unwaveringly during her recent illness.
Travel, quilting, woodworking, gardening, reading, lunching with friends, volunteering, watching HGTV and British crime dramas, and spending time with her daughters and granddaughters were the essence of her life. Her calm, graceful, and thoughtful presence will be missed by all who had the privilege of calling her a friend, sister, aunt, Nana and Mom.
Words cannot express the appreciation the family has for the outstanding care Janet received at Juravinski Cancer Center, Walker Cancer Center, Niagara Health System (St.
Catharines Campus), and Hospice Niagara. The compassion, commitment, and care from the doctors, nurses, technicians, PSWs, dieticians, and so many others defy words.
Janet’s life is a testament to the power of love, strength, kindness, and lifelong learning. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
