Our hearts are still very broken with the loss of Dr Whitty he was an amazing Dr and man. He cared for our whole family as he has been the family Dr since the mid 70’s, he delivered our children, grandchildren and cared for our great grandson. He also made house calls for
my grandmother who wasn’t even a patient of his but she would not go to any doctor so he came to her. Ours hearts go out to all who knew and loved him. He is truly missed.

It’s been a week since my husband and I heard the sad news about Our Dr. Whitty passing away. I can’t stop crying thinking about Dr. Whitty. He meant the world to us! He was so kind and compassionate so caring had all the time in the world for us.
I remember when our son was born I was so nervous being a first time mom. Dr. Whitty knew that my mom lived out of town and he was so helpful and caring. He told me to go in anytime I needed help. I was concerned that my son was not getting enough from me nursing him. Dr. Whitty had me go into his office and he weighed my son then he had me nurse him and when I was finished he weighed him again and reassured me everything was good. He would call many times to check in with how we were doing when the kids were sick. He was available anytime we needed him. He gave us his cell number. He delivered me a sick note during Covid.
He was an amazing man we loved him and told him many times. He was one of a kind.
I am so grateful I talked to him about a month ago regarding some test results. My only regret is I wish I would of made an appointment to see him in person.
We are having such a difficult time with his passing a feel very sad for his family. We want to send our condolences to Mrs. Whitty and family and all the office staff.
We will forever have a special place in our heart for Dr. Whitty. We will cherish all the beautiful memories of him. Dr. Whitty you were the BEST thanks for all the care you gave us for almost 40 years. We will miss you!
RIP Dr. Whitty ❤️

I'm in shock.
My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Whitty and all of the kids and grandkids, and his staff of so many years. And to everyone who, like me, has lost the best doctor imaginable. Dr. Whitty had been my family doctor since 1991. My daughter was 3; my son he delivered. He was my wife's doctor, her mother's, and her grandmother's.
I can't imagine another doctor in this age that would drop off prescriptions for a patient, or that would stop by to check on a home-bound patient.
He can't be replaced.

To the entire Whitty family and staff
It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of Dr. Whitty.
I personally had just spoke to Dr. Whitty less than 24 hours before his passing. He of course, doing what he has always done, called our house asking how we were and giving my wife her information to ease her mind after test results.
Dr. Whitty was a one of a kind Doctor. He has been our family’s doctor for four generations of family members.
We have been with Dr. Whitty and his many staff members since the 1980s.
The most caring of any doctor around in modern times.
From his house calls to my late mother-in-law, the numerous phone calls to our family over the years, he has always been there for our family.
He will be truly missed by all.
We have had countless hunting and fishing stories over the years, right up to my last visit with him. The big wild turkeys running around his backyard. He had to show me the photos. The stories my wife always brought home after seeing him were, has Tim been out fishing? Barb would tell him. Has Tim been doing any hunting? Barb would tell him the results. Keep in mind, this is all going on while examining my wife for whatever her issue was at the time. My wife Barbara always absorbed the questions and then had to tell me about her appointment as soon as she come home.
Like most I’m sure, we do not have enough space to document all that doctor Whitty has done for our family.
Dr. Whitty was like our own family member and that's the rarity he had brought to all who got to know him well.
Our heart felt condolences go out to the Whitty family and all the staff we have had the pleasure of dealing with over these many years.
Tim, Barbara, Amber (Beam) and Johnathan Ballantyne

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Whitty, the family and his colleagues. I will always remember Dr. Whitty as a kind, knowledgeable and selfless doctor. Few could match the standard of care that he provided to his patients. Whether it was house calls or returning calls after the office closed, he put the care of his patients first.
When my late mother was sick, I knew that she was in good hands when she saw him.
I had the privilege of volunteering in his office and I learned from Dr. Whitty firsthand. His commitment to forging strong bonds with the community was such a valued characteristic. The positive impact that he had on his patients and their families will never be forgotten.

I had the extreme privilege of growing up next door to the Whitty family. My memories of Dr. Whitty include him taking Carolyn, Sharon and me on a random flight to Killarney up north one Sunday afternoon. Others include trips to the grape farm in the back of the truck and spitting grape seeds on to the road, giggling all the way home. Several times I spied him catching up on sleep to the Blue Jays game. And in a pinch, if someone in our family was sick, Dr. Whitty always made time for a consultation. I am deeply saddened that he is gone but humbly grateful that he was in my life as more than the neighbour next door, as I have so many sweet memories of him to cherish. To the Whitty family, you have my condolences.

We knew one day you would be retiring and so just deserved and long overdue and we wanted to see you do all those things you talked about and enjoyed.... But if we are being honest, we selfishly never wanted that day to come because we all knew we could never be blessed again with a doctor like Our Dr. Whitty. I still remember the day my dad walked to the office/house on Carlton Street with a basket and four jars of chili sauce to welcome you to the neighbourhood. To Dr. Whitty's family,
We moved her in '81 and my husband worked at the St. Catharines General Hospital. He asked the nurses and other staff who he could get as a good doctor for his family and himself. They all said Dr. Whitty. Dr. Whitty was the most caring, understanding and wonderful doctor that one could ever have. Dr. Whitty has always been a lifeline for me. I was very saddened to hear of his passing away. I spoke with him on Wednesday and what terrible shock it was to our family. He always went above and beyond to help us as a family. My parents also went to Dr. Woody and he and my dad became great friends.

An amazing doctor and an amazing man. We will miss him dearly as will so many of his patients. He has touched so many lives over the years, an entire community is in profound mourning.
He was such an exceptional doctor, a kind soul and with a rare "old-school" work ethic that you just don't find anymore. I remember the house calls whenever you needed him to do so, early Saturday morning appointments he'd set up for us even though the office wasn't open (because he was in doing paper work anyways). What doc's office does that any more? Truly one of a kind and very, very special. A great physician yes, but also a wonderful person and kind soul. He had a great sense of humour and mischivous smile too.
I could go on and on about all the memories and wonderful things he has done for my family and so many other of his grateful patients over the decades. Suffice to say, he was truly one of a kind. We are all so very fortunate to have had such an exceptional physician. Thank you Dr. Whitty and may you rest in eternal peace. God most certainly blesses you and welcomes you with open arms.

Dr Whitty
Dr Whitty was my husband’s doctor for over 50 years. Our daughter and I have only had the pleasure for 24 years, her entire life. I met Dr Whitty for the first time in our home, days after our daughter’s birth, where he had come to check on some minor complications after childbirth. On that day I was so impressed with his compassion and dedication to his profession, and over the years, his compassion and dedication never wavered. In addition, I soon learned that his intelligence and breadth of knowledge were second to none. If he didn’t know the answer he researched it. He was interested in others’ opinions. My husband thoroughly enjoyed their conversations on the out of doors activities, even if it meant a delay in my appointment! Dr Whitty will be missed incredibly by our family, and we can only imagine the depth of the loss to the Whitty family. Our sincerest condolences for this loss.

Dr Whitty will truly be missed by my kids and myself. He was there for the birth of my youngest son and daughter. He became my doctor when I moved to St. Catharines back in 2002. He was the family doctor to my ex husband and his family and he was willing to take on myself and two of my older kids when we moved here. He took care of me throughout my last two pregnancies and I just seen him a couple of weeks ago. He will be sadly missed and he helped me get my status by filling out my paper work and when I seen him last he filled out my paperwork for my two youngest to apply for their status. We enjoyed sitting and chatting while I was there to see him. I am thankful to have had him for a doctor for the last almost 23 years. He diagnosed me when I was having issues walking. He ran tests and found out it was my thyroid gland. Thank you Dr Whitty for everything you have done for my kids and I and you will be missed. Although your shell has left this earth, your soul will on forever in your family's heart and memories. Rest in peace Dr. Whitty. From Sue Yorfido, Cody and Chelsea Bride.❤️❤️

…….and so this is why maybe he couldn’t make it somewhere or was late, distracted or otherwise. Please read on to catch a glimpse of how Dr. Whitty has been a part of the Hunter clan of St. Catharines, took on their spouses, children and now grandchildren as family doctor.
I should indicate I am writing this on behalf of the entire family because we collectively think the same and have had the same experiences of care, it was unwavering consistent and exceptional. For us there has never been, never will be another Dr. Whitty.
To bring some context to the clan, we arrived in Canada as immigrants from Scotland in 1974. My mother, father and 4 little girls, all close in age. We had no other family in Canada. For us, finding Dr. Whitty 1978 as a bright new family doctor was as close to extended family as we were ever going to have. Luckily, we lived within a short walk to the office. I do believe the Sesame Street wallpaper was brand new and boy did it hold up well! That wallpaper would greet us often throughout our childhood/teens and well into adulthood. The familiarities of the office and Dr. Whitty’s calm reassuring voice was always there in our time of need. These things we did not take for granted. We often throughout the years echoed the words of gratefulness, being blessed with such a great doctor. Three of the four little girls eventually becoming Registered Nurses in different capacities supporting the healthcare system. Our intimate understanding of family doctors really was the measure of how Dr. Whitty really was in a league of his own and truly embodied the humanity of providing healthcare. He gave a lot more care and interest than he ever had to. The term patient changes when you’ve known each other for four decades. We all considered Dr. Whitty as part of the extended family as many other families have also.
One of our earliest recollections of Dr. Whitty was seeing him occasionally ride his bike to work down Carlton Street. The office was a place where patients dropped off food in thanks for good care. The receptionists and nurses alike were like family at that time. Everything in the set-up of Dr. Whitty’s office had one common denominator, consistency. Even the fish tank in the front waiting room was a measure of change. You knew if he had added a new piece of scenery or a new fish. The little table for the kiddies was once unmarked and always a great distraction for the moaning of a kiddie with an ailment. Ah, the early years of having a family doctor in the small town of St. Catharines was something right out of books. It’s funny how a little white house on the corner of Carlton and Grote Street would become such a welcoming beacon of help and safety net in our lives. We all passed it daily always knowing the assurance that we were fortunate; if Dr. Whitty wasn’t in the office, you could always find him and the St. Catharines General Emergency department or even the Hotel Dieu Emergency. He was never far. In any event he was spread thin and by many. He never made any problem too small or dismissed our needs and concerns. I remember him in my bedroom leaning over me because my mother was so concerned with my migraine vomiting and lethargy. Imagine? Too unwell to lift my head but Dr. Whitty not too busy to check up on us. I as a parent got to experience that same relief when my middle child was awaiting cardiology at Sick Kids as a newborn. The knock at my door randomly after he had wrapped up a shift at the Hotel Dieu, just checking in on baby Erika. I’m sure he was expected at home. We often saw the lights on and the lone truck at the office when it was closed. Each of us knew he often accommodated seeing patients before or after work. His work days were long and the exhaustive laundry list of complaints and woes must have worn him some days, he never let on. His quiet chuckle or mumble had a certain way that defined him. We won’t say he was a man of few words but he did on occasion talk and walk and luckily he didn’t have many steps to get to the next patient waiting in a room. There was never any greater relief than hearing him rustle the chart on the outside of the door and you would no sooner see him swing inside, all would be well.
As our clan had grown Dr. Whitty luckily took on all our spouses, this was not done by all doctors. I’m sure the amount of gossip he heard must have amused him at times. Knowing us as kids then our spouses and all the trivia in between. We’re not sure how he kept us all straight. He coached us through pregnancies, newborns, and childhood illness and became counsel on occasion on how to handle the wayward teenagers we were complaining about. He would frequently give us snapshots of his family life by mentioning little things that separated him from being Dr. Whitty to dad. His lovely wife that stood in the large family portrait was someone he greatly admired. He mentioned frequently how smart she was and that she was the brains in the family. It’s funny how time escapes us. Those same kiddies in his family picture we got to know even though we had never met. His brief mention of who had done what and you could see pride in his face or concern. The briefness of the mention were kept between the office walls but helped us all know he was just a regular man who had chosen medicine as his job and life. He was such a grounded doctor who never made people feel any less than himself. If he ever had an opinion he was good at keeping the space safe. Being a family doctor really is a mixed bag of professions. The demands are great and the rewards can be greater. We often wondered how he found time to have a family life. Each of us had clips of mentioning visits to Dr.Whitty and saying how the heck does he have so many patients? The patient charts seemed to grow evermore up down and along the walls all the while he was still one doctor.
Each of us never failed to recognize how thorough he was in making sure we had the best care. We each had the opportunity to see the professional connections he had when he could make out of town referrals and they seemed to know who he was. He may have made the choice to be a small town community doctor but he was in no way limited on knowledge. As a veteran Emergency Nurse myself in Hamilton I can attest he was sharp as a tack and more than smart as a family doctor. In my opinion we all lucked out that he was passionate about serving a community. It was a regular practice for Dr. Whitty to whip out a book and check something he had thought about just to ensure he had it right. Again, his dry sense of humor as we became nurses would trigger a comment like “what do the professionals think?” when our spouses were there of medical care. They would all have a chuckle but he knew on a serious note the struggles of the ever growing demands of his positon and healthcare in general.
In the more recent times patient opinions and transient care seem to be the norm. Many people no longer have a family doctor and some even opting for walk in clinic style care. They will never know what we know. They will never experience that certainty of linked care. It’s sad to us including my senior parents to see the end of an era. They are fortunately in stable health but of the generation where family doctors are the pillars of family care. The way of the world now becoming sharper in tone towards doctors and nurses with little account to the dedication and sacrifice one makes to provide that. It does not go unnoticed by this large extended family. COVID-19 didn’t cause Dr. Whitty to hide or abandon his patients. Instead, like the incredible doctor he was he took on the curve of technology and still delivered the care. When others shuttered their practices Dr. Whitty’s vehicles were still in his parking lot. Mrs. Whitty took on the same continuity of care of patients exemplifying what a spouse and partner should be. My brother-in-law suffered a stroke in the recent years and during the height of COVID passed away suddenly at home. As the police and EMS were present, they were shocked that our family doctor came to pronounce at 2 o’clock in the morning. Multiple family members greeted Dr. Whitty at the kitchen, again his face a welcome beacon of support for our family. One of the police officers commented it was the first time in his career he had seen a family doctor be so connected to his patients. For us it wasn’t surprising, it’s all we had ever known and as ever, the gratitude is forever. Somehow he still got up in the morning because the office would still open. It didn’t make any difference to us that Dr. Whitty may have done a phone appointment or one wearing a mask, it was just the times we were in. To the bitter end he was there, providing, working and never failing those who depended on him. I asked him often what the ETA was on retirement. I don’t think he felt ready. Unsurprisingly he did say “I won’t abandon my patients during COVID”.
To say we are sad is an understatement. When we learned of the sad news of Dr. Whitty’s passing the wind stopped. How could that be? Then immediately the warm memories of his connection to us and what we have all lost started to sink in. As I took on the role of wanting to pen a letter to his family I couldn’t get over the magnitude of our loss and therefore cannot imagine his family’s loss. What’s the measure of a man? Honesty, integrity and humanity, this was his. From our clan to yours we grieve alongside you and will forever miss him. It might not have been in his retirement plan to pass suddenly but it was always in his plan to leave a mark on this world. He has certainly done that.
With forever gratitude of sharing him with us…

Dr Whitty took very good care of my dad Dr. George K. and took a personal interest in his well-being. Dr. Whitty's office was near my dads house and he would often walk over to check in on him. I'm sure he was the only family doctor who still did home visits. I remember him telling me that he was at The Keg with his family having dinner, but would come to my house to see my dad who was failing. He had such a great memory that he said he remembered me babysitting his kids some 40 yrs prior when he lived in the house that was next-door to my (then) house. We owe Dr Whitty a debt of gratitude for his dedication to his patients. My condolences to Mrs. Whitty and family.

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Dr. Whitty for many many years. Since leaving his practice we remained close friends and he was always willing to help me through the challenges I faced after losing my mother and later my own physical challenges.
We spoke almost daily for nearly 19 years. He was always there for my children when they needed medical attention.
I had a feeling on Sunday when I tried to text him that something was wrong because there was never a time he didn’t respond.
That amazing Doctor was dedicated to every patient that walked through his door ! He taught me compassion in a sense that no matter their problems, their way of life, their downfall and mental health, they were all to be treated equally and with empathy.
Dr . Whitty based his whole life caring for everyone no matter what walk of life . He continued to do house calls in his big grey truck. He loved hunting and flying was his passion. When my two sons were younger he took us up in his plane ! It was his passion although it left us all a bit green in the face with some of the flying tricks he didn’t mention he’d do. Undeniably he knew what he was doing and it left us with an experience and joy to have had the opportunity of taking part in something he loved.
I can’t ever say enough about Dennis but I know he wasn’t ready to leave yet. He had too much unfinished business. There were times he was at the office at 5 am and worked until 9 pm . I could go on forever about how much I’m going to miss my dear friend and someone who gave me the inspiration to carry on. In his words he’d say “up and at ‘em “ when I’d forgotten how much I’ve achieved in life and with my two amazing boys he’d be sure to remind me. They also are so so saddened as they just had seen him a few days ago for a short visit .
Dear Dennis , I hope you have the opportunity now to finally do and see all the things you’d talked about .
Go do that hunting, fly high in the sky.
Just remember that you left a legacy in all of the people that know you and loved you dearly.
My years of working with you were the best years of my life and I’ll never ever forget what it means to treat people with compassion as you did.
My tears continue to fall for you as it seemed you were indestructible.
Rest in peace Dearest friend and may your family find comfort in each other.at this difficult time, and to my former colleagues I will always miss all the enjoyable times in and out of the office that we had with Dennis.
My phone may be silent now but my memories will always remain .
With love , Brandon, Matthew & Maryann & Patane Family

Dr. Whitty's passing brought tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. He was our family's Doctor for over 40 years and over these many years was thought of like family. He had a great respect for nurses - thank you for always valuing our opinion! The life of a Doctor isn't an easy one, but Dr. Whitty was truly dedicated to his chosen profession and the patients he cared for. They don't make them like you anymore! Our deepest condolences to the entire Whitty family.
