Obituary of Dr. David Smith
SMITH, Dr. David John Kirvell
After a courageous battle with cancer, David passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2019 in his 73rd year. Beloved husband of 49 years to Pat (nee DiSapio). Proud father of Paul (Krystyne), Dr. Daryl (Nadia), Dr. Judene Benoit (Andre). Doting grandfather of his "wild ones" Anika, Sofia, and Wilder. Much loved brother to Ron (Pat), Lois (Victor), Dennis (Madeleine), and brother-in-law to Jim (Ina). David will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his other family at Smith Family Dentistry. Predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Effie (nee Bowland).
David served the St. Catharines community as a dentist for 44 years with compassion and integrity. He was proud that all three of his children also chose careers in the dental field and worked directly with him. In honour of his dedication and generosity in helping patients in need, donations to Community Care’s dental assistance program and the United Way’s Brushed Aside denture program, will be welcomed via George Darte Funeral Home.
Growing up in White River, Ottawa, and North Bay, he developed a great love of the outdoors. An avid canoeist, bowler and golfer; he will be missed by all of his many friends. When he wasn’t in the office, he loved to be in the wilderness of northern Quebec or at his cottage on Stoney Lake. A lifelong learner, he was passionate about pure mathematics, genealogy and the sciences. But above all, he loved his family.
Those wishing to pay their respects will be received at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines on Wednesday, June 26 from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, June 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Vigil prayers will be recited in the funeral home on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. A Funeral Mass for family and friends will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 169 St. Paul Crescent, on Friday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. Rite of Committal will follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
*** Thank you for coming to pay your respects to the one & only. Dr. David Smith. Due to his many contacts in Niagara and the size restriction of the small parish church, we ask that only family, friends and parishioners attend the funeral mass. Besides knowing him, Dave would much rather you get a head start on your long weekend.
