Dear family of Dr. Smith,
I was so very sad to see that Dr. Smith had passed last year. I had moved away and was just looking up info to make an appointment. I was a patient of his since I had my 1st tooth lol! My late mother, Viviane, also had been with Dr. Smith begining many years prior. One of my cherished memories from my childhood was going to see Dr. Smith, I always was always so excited, and thats unusal for kids as we know. It wasn't just the toothbrush and goodies that I recieved at the end either lol! I knew that after my cleaning Dr. would come in and make me feel sooo proud of my smile(teeth). He would always say "WOW, look at those gorgeous teeth!" He had a wonderful way with children and all of his patients. I also remeber when my mother passed, and I had come for a cleaning, he made it a point to come and give his condolences to me in person, although I wasnt to see him directly for dental care (he was retired by then I believe, but still always around:)) I also take my children to Smith Dentistry, there is no where else quite like it! He made his business feel like a home, always inviting and caring! Thank you Dr. Smith for all of your years of service to your community, you are dearly missed! My deepest condolences to the Smith family.
Sincerely,
Jessica Fowler and family

I just heard today of the death of our wonderful dentist. Dr.Smith was our children's first real dentist, when he came to St. Catherines as a young dentist. They loved going to him because he was fun. We loved his fishing stories, it was like going home, he always had a smile and made you feel better even when you were in pain. Just recently our grand daughter (17) said "you know when we go to see "Smitty" as our family called him, he looks in my mouth for a minute and spends all the rest or the time talking to daddy about fishing and stuff,, We the Karasz family will miss him terribly. My he rest in peace.

Dr. Smith was a wonderful dentist ~ always cheerful and smiling and often willing to share a good joke. Even more important, was the kindness and generosity he showed to our family. With a large family of six, he understood that dental care could be costly- but he always arranged for payments to be made over time (in whatever amount we could afford) because he did not want this burden to be an impediment to our continued dental care. He was warm and gentle and always spoke so fondly of his family ~ he was an exceptional example of someone who was appreciative of his blessings, a lover of life and someone who understood the importance of using one's talents and expertise as a way to give back to his community ~ a beautiful legacy, indeed. Rest in Peace, Dr. Smith. The Knight Family (Gail, Gary, Dawnya, Sandy, Sam and Rachel)

I write this stunned by the news of the passing of Dr. Smith. I will always remember David as a kind and gentle soul and, on every visit to the office I made in almost 40 years, what an incredible family man and community pillar with an insatiable thirst for knowledge on so many levels. St. Catharines and Niagara has lost a very special man I will always be thankful to have known. He asked me in the early 90s a few times to join him on one of his legendary canoe trips to northern Quebec and for one reason or another i couldn't pull it off and i tell you how much i have regretted that over the years. What a Great Guy!!!!!!

I don't know where to start for Uncle Dave's immediate family there are not enough well wishing and regrets for the loss of someone who stood as a role model my entire life . Uncle Dave always had an answer or fix for what ever the problem , some of his fixes were Rub - Goldberg in nature but he always got things going .
He always stopped by to check on my mom and dad on the to way or from his camp to check on them and get the latest family update. I watched as he displayed selfless acts of kindness all of his Life. His quick evaluation of a situation of a situation with a OK lets go . You cannot describe a person that was always fully engaged in anything he done. He provided his loving children a unique and exhilarating childhood as he exposed them to life . There are not enough words to describe the loss of Uncle "DAVE" , although he way taken from us far too soon
I try to remember him in all the great times we has together.
Love

My sincere condolences go out to Mrs. Smith, Dr. Daryl, Dr. Judene, the whole Smith Family Dentistry Family and all of Dr. Smith’s other family and friends on the passing of such a genuine, caring, funny man. He has been my dentist for over 40 years and I’m so grateful for everything he has done for me over these many years. He always had something funny to say when I saw him or knew how to ease my worries. I grew up with him and then my husband and kids had the pleasure of dealing with him too. I was shocked on my last appointment back in May to hear that he was sick, but even more shocked to hear or his passing so soon thereafter. I shed a few tears for sure at this heartbreaking news. Please know that all of you have been and will continue to be in my thoughts during this very difficult and emotional time.

Dear Smith Family, I first met Dave in 1980 at Niagara College when we worked together in the hygiene clinic with the students. It was then I found out his involvement with the Kidney Foundation as our family was involved too. Dave and his staff would ride the train to Toronto for the Winter Clinic in November, I would always meet up with them and ride along and Dave would share with me the stories of his summer adventures, portaging, how easy it is to loose your barrings in the thick brush if you happen to loose your hat and want to find it, and about the "guys" that trekked with him, this was long before the days of GPS and Dave was the geography guy/mapper/planner. I temped one day a week in his office for a short time and it felt like going into an art gallery with all his great pieces of nature displayed throughout the office. You could see how he loved all his patients and his career. At this time he told me of his love for the market and how he was experimenting with grafting fruit trees. I always found his stories so interesting and I wowed at all that he was into. At the end of Nov this year i ran into him at the Staff Rd section of the Bruce Trail. He was there with a buddy doing a Christmas bird count but he could not go down the hill due to pain in his knee. He told me that he saw his doctor about it and the Dr had just recently called him (on the day that he gave of his time and talent at the Prison), more tests were quickly being aligned. He said he was determined to make his golfing trip in Jan. We shared many hugs as I said my goodbye to him as my husband and i continued on our hike. I was so happy to see him, it had been a few years, sad to hear the news he shared with me, glad i had those hugs with him. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of an amazing man, father, grandfather and dentist, "the good ones dies young" . His spirit lives on in so many and within so much . Sincerely Renee

Dear Smith family
It is a shock for me to read of David's passing. David came to me before starting to practice in St Catharines, when he had just finished Dental College. I encouraged him to come here and practice here. He told me some years later about our 1st conversation and said I convinced him to come to St Catharines, which I had long forgotten.
We became friends, and saw each other at dental meetings, and continuing education courses. We even went on some remote canoe trips, along with Dr Dennis Begora. I used to tease David because he only wanted to carry packs of Salsbury steaks for every dinner, even if the trip was 14 days long.
I do not live in St Catharines for the last 7 years, so did not know of his illness. I very much enjoyed his sense of humour, and his sharp mind. He will be missed as a good man and excellent Dentist

I'm deeply saddened by this and as I writing I'm crying, he was one of the few actually good people on this planet. He took care of my family over the years by allowing us to make payments, if it wasn't for him and his practice most my family couldn't afford dentistry! May he rest in peace, my thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I am very sorry for your loss. While I didn't know Dr. Smith outside of being my dentist, he was always happy, positive, and very caring. This also showed in his practice, as all of his staff showed the same compassion and kindness. I'm sure Dr. Smith will not only be missed by his family and loved ones, but also by his community. May your sorrows, soon turn into smiles, from all the wonderful memories you shared with Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith has been my dentist for more than 35years. I first met him when he was practicing on Ontario St. I hadn’t seen a dentist in 10 years as I was terrified of them. He took me under his wing and was so gentle and patient and never did a procedure without letting me know what would happen. Over the years I sent many of my employees to him and many of them were only making minimum wage but that didn’t matter. He helped everyone of them regardless of wether they could afford it or not. He has treated four generations of my family (who also comes from North Bay) and he was so proud of his family and loved to show them off in pictures hanging in many of the rooms in his office. RIP Dr Smith we will all miss you. I can’t imagine seeing any other dentist.

David (or really Dr. Smith... as I've come to know over the past 30 years) was the pleasant gentleman who would come in and tell me how lucky I was to have my teeth in such great shape. He would then share a story or two of portaging or traveling far north in Quebec to find that solitude we all dream of. You, my good dentist (friend) will be deeply missed. My condolences to the Smith family and the entire dental office family.

Pat, Paul, Daryl, and Judene,
Words can't even begin to express my deepest condolences to you all and your family. David was amazing man and an amazing dentist. I have so many fond memories of him. I loved how outgoing he was and how he made everyone feel like family when they walked into the office. I thank him so much for taking the fear of dentists out of me and my family. I thank him for cleaning up my teeth and having that bond with us. Every time we walked in both Hannah and I asked if David was there. There was no other dentist in the world like him. He was a one of kind.
We love you all and are praying for you.
