Obituary of Gerald Joseph Cheevers
CHEEVERS, Gerald Joseph "Jerry"
Passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Monday, February 15th at the St. Catharines General Hospital-NHS in his 84th year.
Predeceased by his cherished wife Nancy (nee Kratz) in 1981 and beloved daughter Jennifer in 2006.
He was the much loved father of Debbie (John) Snow, Joseph (Julie), and Joanna, and devoted Grandpa of Steven, John Matthew, Elizabeth, Jaiden, Sophie and Carson. He leaves behind his sisters in law Jane (Curt) Chasowy, Jackie (Doug) Leach and Laura Cheevers and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jerry was also predeceased by his brothers William and Leo and his sister Helen (Tom) DeYoung.
Jerry was a Henley Champion rower and coach and former Club Captain for the St. Catharines Rowing Club. In his later years, he was a volunteer on the docks at various regattas and then became a finish line official. As an Alumni of the St. Catharines Rowing Club, he always looked forward to their meetings where he would catch up with his many friends. He was also an avid bowler and a longtime autobody specialist, finishing his career as an Instructor at Niagara College.
Jerry's family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Thursday, February 18th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, February 19th at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, 3 Lyman Street, St Catharines at 10:30am. Vigil Prayers will be recited in the funeral home on Thursday at 3:30pm. In keeping with his wishes, cremation will follow the service with a private inurnment at a later date.
If desired, memorial donations to the One Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
