I was rowing my single down the course early in the spring and after a hard piece near the finish tower I fell out of my boat. I popped my head above the water and it was so cold that I could not breathe. Frank was following me in his coach boat and he drove over, picked me out of the water and set me back in my boat. He then told me to row back to the dock. I had warmed back up by the time I reached the dock. He always told me that he was my Ace in the hole and he proved in on that day. Thanks for saving my life Frank! I will miss you.
Also: Thanks to everyone that commented on my Dad's passing. The funeral service was on Saturday and the priest stated that it was the largest turnout he had ever seen. Thanks for everyone that attended, our family greatly appreciated you being there to celebrate his life.

I was fortunate to have had Frank as a coach at the St. Catharines Rowing Club in the 80's. In true Frank fashion, he was able to balance making us fast on the water, while ensuring we enjoyed ourselves just as much off the water. The harder we worked and faster we became, the more fun there was to be had. Who knew at the time, that the Frank "special", (12 min piece up to the black bridge, first and turd 5, and "I'll buy the first round at the Lions") would prepare us for all those wins. Those sure were great times, and made for incredible memories. I think it was about this time that Frank transitioned to become known as the Silver Fox, with the life lessons continuing.
Competing in Mexico, and the mandatory, every morning, still in bed waking up, dark rum mouthwash, (it'll kill the germs boys), to the six or seven bulky sweaters he brought back with him in a garbage bag, with that ever present cigar in the side of his mouth.
Driving forever in Boston looking for the Head of the Charles after party, only to be asked to leave after only a few minutes inside.
Running out of gas on the 401 on our way to Montreal due to his fancy new Oldsmobile not telling us we were out of gas.
Going for a skinny dip in the St. Lawrence on the way home from Montreal to keep us awake, Frank leading the charge.
Friday after work parties at Bertos.
The list goes on and on.
Forever a leader of men. Always injecting wisdom along the way to make us think, and attempt to make us better people. And always prepared to do whatever it took to help somebody out.
Getting together in his basement over the last few years to relive all those races, and memories, the wins, the losses, (1984 John), were some of the best nights you could imagine.
Thanks for all you did for us Frank.
Now only if I could remember the words to his limerick "There once was a women from Australia ..."

My condolences to all of the Dwyer family....Through years living on Shakespeare and knowing all the kids through St. Denis I also knew your parents. Frank always had a smile on his face and a little story to tell. Through the years we would run into each other occasionally and then frequently when both my Mom and Frank were at Shaver Hospital....and again...the warm smile and a greeting...never complaining.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all
Added note to Janet........What a touching "eulogy" you wrote for your Dad....Made me laugh and cry....a beautiful tribute !

The entire rowing community is saddened by the loss of Frank. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. We were blessed to have Frank as a member of our club as an athlete, coach, mentor and volunteer. Frank was always a welcome face at the boathouse, the grandstand or the alumni and was revered by anyone who was so fortunate to have been coached by him. The young athletes at the club today may not have known Frank personally but recognize his name as it adorns the bow of a fast 4+ that is a true winner, just like its namesake. He gave so much to rowing and to our club, and like so many of his era helped it get established on Henley Island. God bless you Frank and rest in peace.

me and my husband met frank an annie when we moved in across the street. we were young and having our first house didn't know alot about alot. frank quickly became our father figure and the go to guy when there was problems.the proper way to fix it and the story to go with it and that always took a few beers.didn't matter what he was doing he alway's made time to access the situation. he became a very important man in our lives.
all of his jokes, limericks will stay with us forever we'll never say them right but the meaning is still there. total respect and admiration we loved him dearly.

OK..... since our Bishop won't allow reading Eulogy in mass I am going to post it here:
I want to thank everyone for celebrating the life of Frank Dwyer.
Frank is my dad but he was so much more than that:
He was a Roman Catholic who rarely missed Sunday mass,
he aspired to be Christian in his everyday interactions with others.
to be a living example of kindness....
Frank was a devoted husband to Ann and father of five children
including triplet daughters; Mary, Maureen and Maggie....
Imagine five kids under the age of four.. it made quite an impression on Jim and I
Dad was the ‘provider’, the ‘head’ of the family, rarely missed a day of work.
He always took care of the complex needs of his family over the years.
By his own description he was “a grade nine dropout” - but he was a very capable young man- apprenticed to be electrician, had a 40 year career with the city hydro as linesman then foreman. He retired as superintendent.
Some of us would agree that he is still supervising the Hydro.....
the night after Frank passed we had power outage that lasted for 3 hours... Franks little section of the grid was out...
Brian Fisher, one of his dear rowing ‘boys’, dropped by the house.....he said "What's going on, Did Frank do this?” -”The Fairview mall and all the stores are pitch black except for the liquor store which is glowing like a beacon”....
We both agreed it was Frank giving us a poke. reminding us not to forget him.
Frank was an athlete, a rower, a revered coach, a life mentor really.....
He leaves behind a huge legacy for the Saint Catharine's Rowing Club where he volunteered for many decades ....he was personally responsible for bringing hydro to Henley Island.....he always got the job done..
Frank gained the respect and admiration of many young athletes as a coach. Oarsmen from his crew became lifelong friends...I want to thank Stu Burns for being the Social coordinator of all the get togethers in Frank’s basement,
for driving him to the grandstand for Henley, and to the Old Boys meetings.....
feeling connected to people meant so much to my Dad.
Frank touched the lives of so many people....a bit like a boat rudder touches the water: quietly steadily under the surface....
He certainly steered my career choice by lending me his camera when I went off to university. Photography became my lifelong career and passion.
My brother Jim still rows competitively because of Frank.....”the perfect sport”.
Some of the young men Dad coached are now coaching the next generation.
Friends and family benefited by his wisdom, his advice and optimism,
he was a giver, always very generous with his time, always had time for you.
Frank loved to talk about many subjects.......Last year he said to me if
“I kick the bucket no tears eh. ..l had a great life, a long one, lots laughs and fun,
I loved my job, I love my family and friends”.
When the daily newspaper came, he always read the obits first:
“to make sure he wasn't in there” ...”I’m still here” he’d say...
If he recognized a name I'd ask “do you want to go to their funeral?”....
he’d say “no I don't think so, they’re not going to mine”.
He was always trying to make you laugh, be the bright spot in your day.
Frank enjoyed social and family gatherings especially Christmas,
he was a great dancer, the life of the party.
In his spare time dad enjoyed working on cars..VW’s ,Volvos (the tanks)
he let me spend time in the garage helping, even though I wasn't a guy....
Reminiscing about this years later I told him that it seemed we spent more time looking for tools than working on cars - he said “it’s called bonding!”
Frank believed everyone should have practical skills regardless of gender,
so he taught all the girls on the street how to change a car tire.
Always encouraging, he made you believe that goals were reachable with patience and practice. “skill, science and ability” was a favourite saying of his....
Frank was never shy about telling you the right way to do things ..
Fixing or repairing something mechanical gave him so much joy..
he loved telling people in extensive detail how things worked,
anyone else sat through one of those long explanations??
nodding like you had some clue what he was talking about?."
.......I sure learned a lot of useful skills from him.
We all have stories and memories of Frank.
A vivid one for me is him climbing up 25 or 30 feet high into the maple tree in their backyard ...chainsaw in hand, safely roped in with a body harness,
swinging like a monkey from branch to branch, cutting big limbs off the tree .....
......he was 80 at the time, 80 years old !
Not too long after, a stroke took all that away and he learned what life with a handicap was like, humbling for a guy who could do anything ....
A real challenge for him.
So he got himself a computer and learned how to use it.
Never one to shy away from new technology.....
Frank was impressed especially by Google.....
Look he says to me “you can ask it anything and find an answer:
“How can I get laid tonight?”.........that was Frank!
He spent a lot of computer time researching the Dwyer family history,
keeping in touch with friends and family on Facebook, emailing people,
he was great at forwarding jokes and interesting posts.
The stroke weakened his left side but that didn't stop him from building a woodshed
at the back of the garage --all by himself!....he was so proud of that.
Frank wasn't happy unless he had some project on the go
or was helping out one of the neighbors.
THE handyman/ THE snowblower guy/The advisor
especially for the widows of Shakespeare Ave.
Everyone knew they could count on him .....
friends enjoyed dropping by for a drink in the garage .....
wood stove blazing, radio on, various appliances in pieces.....
constant discussions and laughs....life lessons as well.
One of his favorite expressions was One up ...
we all knew that meant bring him a cold beer.
Several of his grandchildren figured out early on he might tip them, a loonie!
they got to be really fast at fetching that beer!
Frank was a very proud Grandfather,
Ann and him loved having the Grandkids around ....
sadly I missed many of these times living in British Columbia,
However, I was privileged to spend this last decade of winters living with my parents.....winter season was a good time to show up for them....
I got to know both my parents again in an very intimate way,
so rewarding to be able to complete a full circle of life....
I want to close by thanking Frank for all that he gave to each and every one of us .
...we will miss you, we will never forget you
......now YOU are the “one up”.

Your spirit and friendship, your humour and quick wit will never be forgotten. My baby brother Richard thought the world of you and I know you loved him dearly. I know the Shakespeare crowd will miss you terribly. Dear Frank, you were definitely one of a kind and to know you was to love you. Always a warm welcome, especially in the garage where the temps could reach a 100 degrees on a cold winters day, but the coors was always cold. Never to be forgotten .....................lots of love to a very genuine soul...................rest in peace

To all of the Dwyer Family,
Many athletes and coaches have passed through the ranks of the St. Catharines Rowing Club myself included, and Frank Dwyer is unquestionably one of the most enduring and preeminent personalities to cross the bridge to and walk the tarmac of Henley Island. From the old original boathouse to the current location Frank was there. Amidst the continued evolution of technology and psychology within the sport Frank never lost touch with, and always managed to interweave his unique style along with his common sense understanding and clear perspective of the sport to any program that we was coaching. His athletes could always relate to him because he made competing both challenging and fun at every level.
Competitor, high school and club coach, national team coach and more, Frank covered the full spectrum of involvement within in the rowing community. But, most importantly, even after Frank had long set down his megaphone and rate watch and was resting at home he never disappeared with the passage of time. His friends, colleagues and former athletes enjoyed keeping in touch with him and visiting at his home as much as possible up until his final hours; and I am grateful that I was able to join in on some of those occasions. This is indeed the truest tribute to the many lives that he had touched. Humour, sincerity, dedication, and ability... Frank encompassed it all. Never to be forgotten. He will be missed.
