Rose, Thomas Barry
July 29, 1942 - October 22, 2014.
With great sadness we announce that Barry passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 22, 2014 at the NHS St. Catharines Hospital after a nine-month illness that was borne with courage and dignity and marked by deep gratitude to those who cared for him so compassionately. Beloved husband of Marilyn. Loving father of Jill MacPhail (Jamie), and Bryan Rose (Andrea). Adored Papa of Lauren, Aiden, Paige and Brynn. Cherished brother of Glenna Colling (Murray). A chemical engineer and well-respected plant and operations manager, Barry enjoyed his work and his many colleagues at Cyanamid Canada, Schenectady International, Reichhold Canada, and most recently Mancuso Chemicals. Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will commence at 10 am on Saturday November 1, 2014 at Ridley College Memorial Chapel, 2 Ridley Road, St. Catharines, Ontario. A service of remembrance and celebration will follow at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Barry's valiant struggle, the family would welcome memorial donations in his name to the Molly and David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Barry’s Life
Son of Harry and Hazel Rose, Barry was raised on farmland in then-rural Burlington, Ontario, and grew up surrounded by a large extended family consisting of many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Rose and Bowen families. He remembered his childhood as idyllic. It was a time when children were able to run around freely and play outdoors for long hours, supervised at a safe distance by parents and other relatives who together kept an eye out for “the gang” as they happily explored the adjacent family properties.
Barry was at heart a family man: nothing made him prouder or brought him more joy than his marriage, his wonderful daughter and son, Jill and Bryan, and his adored grandchildren. He spent many happy times with Jill’s three children, Lauren and twins Aiden and Paige. He regretted that he had so little time with Bryan’s little daughter Brynn, but enjoyed every moment he had with her too, and was happy that he lived long enough to see her walk and begin to form her first words. His good times with his sister Glenna and her family and with Marilyn’s siblings and their families were treasured memories. It is hard to imagine family Christmases and annual picnics without Barry’s always good-humoured presence. He lit up a room.
Barry was trained as a chemical engineer at McMaster University, where he met Marilyn. They married in August 1966. An engineer and well-respected plant and operations manager, Barry enjoyed his work and his many colleagues at Cyanamid Canada, Schenectady International, Reichhold Canada, and most recently Mancuso Chemicals. He worked in many sectors of the chemical industry, spending a good number of years in the sales and managerial areas, including holding senior management portfolios in Health and Safety.
However, his favourite positions, and those he chose to focus on during his last years of employment, were in plant and operations management. He was mechanically and technically adept – could fix just about anything at home or at work. He really enjoyed working on chemical processes and problem-solving when it came to the “recipes” and equipment used to produce manufactured products. But he enjoyed even more his work with the people and teams that manufacturing involves. When it came to leadership, Barry was an outstanding manager, much respected and appreciated by those he led in completing complicated projects where everyone’s contributions were needed and valued – and every member of the team knew that. Barry’s last position, held until his first hospitalization in February 2014, was at Mancuso Chemicals in Niagara Falls and he was honoured to have been able to complete his professional life there.
