Obituary of John Pryde Newberry
NEWBERRY, John Pryde
1950-2014
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Pryde Newberry on Friday, July 18, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of the late Jeanne (nee Bertrand) Newberry (2004) for 33 years. He was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Jennifer (1977). Devoted father of Michelle and her partner Dwayne Andrus and his children Sara and Mitchell, Ted and daughter-in-law Dawn. Papa to his beloved Jack, and Molly his four legged companion. He is survived by his six sisters. Holding him close to their hearts are several family members and friends. John was born in Bryson, QC on July 20th, 1950 to the late Ted (1996) and Hilda (1972) Newberry. He attended St. Mary’s Teacher's College in Chapeau, QC. He began his teaching career in Montreal in 1967 and in 1969 moved to St. Catharines, ON to embark upon his 30 year career with the Lincoln County Separate School Board. He taught at St. Joseph on Chestnut St., St. James, Assumption, St. Denis, St. Theresa and St. Peter Elementary Schools. He coached several sports teams and ran board wide Cross Country meets. John also coached several hockey and baseball teams within St. Catharines. John retired in 1999 and started a lawn cutting business that lasted 7 years. His love for students, friends and family will never be forgotten. All who knew him also knew of his great love for the Montreal Canadiens. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the countless people who have supported us through his journey. Dr. Brian Kerley and all the amazing staff and volunteers at Hospice Niagara, Dr. Alison Suk, CCAC and the nursing and PSW staff who lovingly came into our home. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St. on Sunday, July 27, from 4-8 p.m. Vigil prayers will be said in the funeral home at 7 p.m. There will be a celebration of John's life at Coppola’s Ristorante and Banquet Facility, 203 Carlton St. on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., friends are invited for 10 a.m. John has asked that all who attend his celebrations to please come wearing their hockey apparel to represent the sport he loved so much. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to Hospice Niagara.
