Obituary of Rev. Mervin Fernback

FERNBACK, Rev. Mervin It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fr. Mervin Fernback on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the St. Catharines General Hospital, in his 87th year. Fr. Mervin is survived by his brother Ray (Helen) and by 15 nephews and nieces. Fr. Mervin was predeceased by his parents Irene and Joseph, by his sisters Maureen Gipp, Audrey Kennedy, also by his devoted housekeeper of 42 years, Joan Backshall. Fr. Mervin will be greatly missed by his close friends Larry and Barb Mullen, their 3 children, and especially by his brother priests of the Diocese of St. Catharines. Fr. Mervin was ordained in Toronto in 1952. His first assignment was at St. Mary's in Welland, followed by the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria. He then served as a Hospital Chaplain for three years. Fr. Mervin was then appointed as a Pastor at St. Elizabeth's, St. John Bosco, St. Patricks in Merriton and St. Martin of Tours in Smithville. Fr. Mervin retired in 1999, but continued to serve the faithful at the Cathedral until his death. Funeral arrangements are entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL. Fr. Mervin will lie in state at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, 3 Lyman St, on Tuesday, July 16, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Cathedral on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 10 a.m. Rite of Committal to follow Mass, at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be given to the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria.
