Aunt Natalie touched our lives in many ways. As a niece through marriage she always made me feel welcome and a part of the family. There are so many wonderful memories. When I think of her I think of her garden and her kitchen. Yet, she was a talented artist, seamstress, teacher and nurse. Her warmth touched many lives, from newborns to the elderly. She practised what she preached and we were all better for having had her in our lives.

Filled with Kindness and always there to help - Aunt Natalie
April 10,2011
To: Tim, Jeanne and family
From: Gerry and Sandra Rein - Saskatchewan
Some people just should never get old and should certainly never die. Aunt Natalie is one of those.
I am a nephew of Aunt Natalie, living in Riverhurst, Saskatchewan. I was one of the many people that benefitted from the true kindness of Aunt Natalie, Uncle David, Jane and Tim in the 60's when they lived in Saskatoon. They took me into their home for two of my university years as I worked on and received my Engineering Degree. I could not have gone to university if it hadn't been for Aunt Natalie and the Appelt family. I will never forget this wonderful act of kindness.
Aunt Natalie's kindness didn't stop with helping me personally. She helped us on many occasions in the late 70's when my wife Sandra and I lost both of our mothers.Aunt Natalie, busy as she was, took our children into the Appelt home for periods of time when we really needed help. Aunt Natalie holds a special place in our family's hearts. We know she will rest in peace!!

The Appelt Home
I have such vivid and fond memories of time spent in the Appelt home. Indeed, I was staying with the Appelts in 1966 at their home in Saskatoon, when I became engaged to Roger. A year later, after our marriage, Natalie took me under her wing and was a wonderful mentor in all things - but especially in the culinary arts. Roger and I were always welcome and we very often "dropped by" when our own food supply was short. We were always invited to stay for a delicious meal which seemingly magically appeared.
Later, after we had moved to St. Catharines. and the Appelts also moved to St. Catharines after David's retirement from the University of Saskatchewan, these good times continued. The Appelt home was always a place of refuge, good conversation, laughter, and, of course, good food. We also played Scrabble- but I could never beat David.
David taught part-time at the St. Catharines seminary and played the organ for chapel services. During these years Natalie entertained scores of seminary students.
I am sure Natalie missed her days as a hostess in her later years. Her one comment when we visited her at The Loyalist, was that she missed being "useful". Otherwise she seemed very thankful for the life God had given her and her new situation.
Many thanks, Natalie for wonderful times and fond memories.
