I am one of many people that many years ago benefited from Art's gerosity and kindness. Through the years I was also witness to him helping out people in need, never asking for anything in return, and often knowing that he would never be repaid if he loaned money. it was always inspiring to see someone down and out receive a meal from Art or a few bucks to help out that individual. On at least two occasions i witnessed Art contribute or help out a person out of dire predicaments with vast amounts of financial help. In these cases, yes, he was repaid, but he was the only person that would help out the individual on nothing more binding than a handshake. Art did all of this quietly, not calling or yearning for attention for his deeds, but practically anonymously that would let the recipient maintain their own dignity and self-respect. Though Art at times might present as being gruff, he truly had a heart of gold and had kindness for those that were down and out. In my eyes he set the standard for true charity in the community that he lived in.
It was always great to sit and talk to Art. His memory of St. Catharine's history and stories were both educational and always filled with humorous anecdotes. In his own way , he taught me much of what I didn't know about St. Catharines.
Art, thanks for being a great teacher, but also a bigger voice of gratitude for letting your examples in doing things teach me about charity and how to treat people. Thanks for your stories and history lessons. I can only hope, in a small way, that I apply what i learned from you by observation and that I can somehow emulate some of those great charachteristics you possessed in your own unique way.
Sure will miss you, Art. Thanks for everything and may you rest in peace.

Donna & Family.. Uncle Art was the last of the big family and we always made it a point to visit while we were in St. Catharines. He was a very busy man and seems that he didnt have time to get sick and was pretty well always there for the family and all others as well. He did a lot for people as you know. Guess he pretty well followed in Grandma's footsteps. Usually his restaurant was the first place I stopped when I came back to St. Catharines to visit from Nova Scotia. I will sure miss him and the good talks we had when I was home.
Hope all goes well, sorry I cant be there. Another chapter in the Smith Family lays at rest. He deserves a good rest. God bless you all, to the family and friends.
Nephew Ross & Verna Smith.
Will be in touch soon.

We send our condolences. Art has truly been an outstanding member of our community. I vividly remember Art which truly warms my heart when we used to go to the Lakeside Dining Room. Art would greet us at the door, with his attire being that of a black suit and white shirt and tie. Art would escort us to our seats and make us feel so special. We would then sit down and have an absolutely beautiful Prime Rib Dinner. We would go to Art's for Sunday breakfast for quite a few years and i would truly look forward to Karaoke. One day imparticular stands out in my mind when I went into Art's and I said "Art, you are just the man I'm looking for" My father-in-law had passed away and I explained the situation with short notice Art gave me the Helena Room for the Family to congregate after the funeral service. I was so full of gratitude and my heart was warmed so, just to know that there are people that truly do care in our community. I myself, being in the health care field, am quite aware of the outstanding contributions, fundraisers, the wheel chair foundation to mention a few and how Art has been able to help many people that were down and out, and people that couldn't afford wheelchairs or scooters and giving people mobility and improving their quality of life. This is how I will always Remember Art Smith, helping any one he possibly could that was in need. I loved his stories and the way he would smile when reminiscing about the past history of this city and the people that live here. I will never forget Art. Sincerely, Kathryn Allyson Swift.

We have been a friend Art for many years. Every time we would be in the downtown area the trip would not be complete without a visit the the restaurant.
I have noticed when Art moved around the city from restaurant the restaurant, his loyal restaurant patrons would move with him. You do not get that kind of loyalty without being good to the people of your community Respect and loyalty is earned and these are just two of the many things that Art had earned over his many years. Art, you will be missed more than you ever could have imagined.
