Paddlefoot
Sarah,
You know I just had to share this one with the world . . .
As many of you know, Sarah and I met each other the first day of kindergarten and became instant friends (or as they say today, BFF's.) I probably spent more time at the Hedberg's house in Exton than I did at my own house when I was a kid. If I wasn't at Sarah's house, Sarah was at mine. My mother worked full time, which was very unusual back then. Martha Hedberg quickly became my transportation, picking me up and taking me home from their house after playing with Sarah.
I grew up on a major highway - the Lincoln Highway - otherwise known as Rt. 30. Not far from my house was a manufacturing plant called Autocar. When the plant closed at 4:00 pm, the traffic was unbelievably heavy. No one wanted to be near my house at that time, as our driveway was not easy to access during times with no traffic, let alone at 4:00 pm during the week when Autocar let out.
Hanna turned 16 when we were about 7 years old. It quickly became Hanna's "job" to take me home at the end of a play day with Sarah. I can still hear her voice, insisting, with pure panic in her voice, that I get ready to go " . . . before 4:00. I want to get you home before Autocar lets out." Hanna absolutely HATED our driveway. Story #1.
Story #2 - Sarah and I were very involved in Girl Scouts and Martha Hedberg, was actually our troop leader for several years. Part of scouting involved summer camp and Camp Tweedale was the camp we attended. When Hanna was old enough, she became a camp counselor at Camp Tweedale. Her camp name was Paddlefoot. For weeks and weeks prior to attending camp I was grilled - once we got to camp, she was Paddlefoot. I was not to mention the name Hanna - ever. Seems easy enough, even for a child, right? Wrong. One day during camp I passed Hanna, and, of course, without thinking, smiled and said, "Hi Hanna." Wrong thing to say!! Did I ever get the lecture of my life! She was more than very unhappy with me! She was furious!
Years later, sitting around the pool in Exton on occassion, we still laughed about that one. Silly me. Luckily there were no other campers within earshot, so her secret was safe, but that was day that I will never, ever forget.
I could go on and on with stories and memories - like the time John broke his finger at the Blue Hole when the parents were out of town and Hanna was in charge - but I won't. There isn't enough room here for all that I'd want to say anyway.
I will always have fond memories of our trip to St. Catherine's to visit her. She was like a big sister to me, and she was always kind, always positive, and always smiling (well, except for that one time at camp, anyway.) I truly believe that she's in a much better place, no longer suffering, no longer in pain. Able to travel where ever she wants to go. Singing at the top of her lungs, dogs at her side.
We were all lucky to know such a wonderful person. She will be missed.
Fondly,
Susan (Szilagyi) D'Amico (Sue)

Sarah & John,
I am so very sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do to ease the pain, please don't hesitate to ask.
May the wonderful memories you both have of your sister help you to find peace and comfort at this time.
All my love,
Sue D'Amico

Hanna's dog Midnight
Dear Hanna's family,
We are the family who have Midnight. We send our sympathies to you for Hanna. We never got to meet Hanna, but we know she was a wonderful, amazing woman. We knew this from meeting her neighbours and friends at the Vet when we got Midnight. Also, we could tell how much she loved Midnight by his manner. He is such a great dog and it was obvious to us how much she loved him and he loved and respected her. Our story is that when we read Hanna's obituary, we thought it was really amazing that Hanna was an Elementary French School Teacher and a Chartered Accountant. Midnight was really meant to be with us as our oldest daughter Kim is in her final year at Brock to be a French teacher and our youngest daughter is in her second year in the States to be an Accountant. Thank you for Midnight and we are glad we are able to see Hanna's picture - what a beautiful lady. Again, our sympathies to you all.

I met Hanna when I was working in Port Dalhousie. She was a familiar figure walking her beloved dogs in all weather and more than once a day. It was a pleasure to have known her and I am sorry to hear of Hanna's passing. She will be missed.
