Mr. Smelle gave me my first job as a young boy in the summer of 1973. My main task was to assemble new Targa 10 speed bikes, the Shop†™s biggest seller. Each bicycle had to be assembled flawlessly, and with no excuses! Mr. Smelle was demanding of everyone, and I was truly scared to death of him. But he was fair. One rainy day I really struggled alone to assemble units as fast as they could be sold. At day†™s end as I was quietly leaving the old back garage, his unmistakeably raspy voice boomed out, †œHey, good job kid!† Shocked as he shook my hand, he passed me a $5 bill, a generous bonus in those days. To this day, if I†™m taping handlebars, I follow his instructions, and think back to that summer.

Tom, I was so sorry to learn of the sudden passing of your dad. Karen Carlson mentioned it to me. Your family has had a difficult time in the last few months, losing your mom and now your father.
Hard to imagine how many generations of St. Catharines kids knew your dad from Niagara Cycle and Sport, isn't it?
You have a lifetime of memories of him to keep - hope that helps at this sad time.

Working for Tom at Niagara Cycle & Sports was not like working for any other boss or employer but was more like family and that is how I felt from day one.
Tom didn't have customers he had friends and that was how he treated everybody who walked through his door, some would come in for a hockey stick or a roll of tape and would end up staying for an hour or two just talking and hearing his stories.
I have very fond memories of the best days of my life spent with Tom and his family, not only was working for Tom fun but it was a learning experience, a life learning experience I will never forget.
Thank you Tom for the fun, the stories, the laughter, the friendship.

We were shocked and sadden by the news of Tom's passing. We all remember him fondly and his loving care for Annie. We send our sympathy and love to the family. He was a great hockey player and we so enjoyed his stories and his sense of humour. He was a gracious loving man. God bless.
