Aunt Eleanor was a truly incredible woman. So intelligent, well-spoken and passionate about life and what was important to her. She was an amazing role model, the kind of strong, self-assured and accomplished woman that you just couldn’t help but admire. Underneath all of that she had the kindest, warmest heart. She always let you know how good it was to see you and insured that the people around her felt seen, heard, and appreciated. She welcomed friends and family into her home with open arms. Aunt Eleanor always took the time to share a little story, ask about my life and give a warm hug and a big smile. When my children came along she made them feel welcome snd special and loved from the moment they met her. That’s what she did.
Sending all of my family love during this great loss. May the wonderful memories she created carry on in our minds and our hearts. And may she continue to be a source of inspiration for us all. Much love Aunt Eleanor. ♥️

I first met Eleanor, when she and Laura Sabia, a well known St. Catharines City Councillor , were organizing a "Women In Politics " forum , where they stirred up a good number of candidates, and at the meeting inspired them with practical words of a tried and true activist on numerous important issues that needed fixing! "Imediately"! Later that month I ran down Martindale to Lakeshore road for a visit Upon walking into her kitchen I was amazed at the evidence of her high energy, knowledgeable, capable, and caring qualities all in one person. As Eleanor was ironing a stack of clothing; had just shelled peas for the dinner's stew; was surrounded by Ontario's Environmental Appeal Board reports; and as I left, was headed up to look after her father.
What a great and caring person Eleanor was for her family, and for residents of St. Catharines, Niagara as a whole, and the Province.

The recent passing of the two-term Niagara Regional Council, Eleanor Lancaster, provides an opportunity to celebrate the life of one of our community's most courageous community leaders. It also helps give us an understanding of how such good leadership is important to assuring the basic needs of public health and safety.
Eleanor Lancaster was narrowly defeated by another Niagara statesperson, Jim Bradley in her one attempt to become a member of the provincial legislature. Had she prevailed it is possible that given her skill in addressing important issues, in a politically realistic fashion, she might have become the Premier of Ontario.
The victories of two of our great state persons draw attention to the importance of the impact of participation in democratic politics. Outside of Niagara Jim Bradley is best known for his role in curbing acid rain pollution, while serving as Ontario's Minister of Environment. Eleanor Lancaster's greatest achievement was a similar victory which diminished the impacting of toxins raining down on us.
During her eight years on Niagara Regional Council, Eleanor Lancaster's greatest achievement was to expose the danger of Chloride pollution that would be generated if the planned Ontario Waste Management Corporation (OWMC) Incinerator was approved. Chlorides are impure salts produced in high quantities by the treatment of chemicals, which unless encased in ceramics, enter drinking water if buried underground.
Lancaster exposed the dangers of Chlorides through an mock hearing at Brock University that she organized of an environmental review hearing. When the actual hearing was held, the Chloride danger was the reason that the OWMC incinerator was rejected.

Eleanor and I served together for several years on the Legal Aid Area Committee.
That was the body that heard the appeals from refusals of legal aid funding. The people appealing usually appeared without legal counsel. The whole point of their appeal was that they could not afford to pay a lawyer. About sixty percent of the appellants were women, many seeking custody of their children, many having left situations of domestic violence.
Eleanor was always in favour of granting the funding. A more compassionate person never existed. Eleanor was a true servant of the people. The Area Committee held her in great respect and affection.

To my dear cousins, Richard, Janet, Liz and Greg and to your beautiful families big and little.
What wonderful memories you have shared with your incredible mom and Gram over these many years, which makes it all the more difficult to say goodbye.
I know that she was very proud of each and every one of you.
We are so grateful to have been a small part in Aunt Eleanor’s interesting story of life, with family being at the heart.
Thank you Aunt Eleanor for welcoming us to the many family celebrations in your lovely home and the yearly “Lancaster Ladies” afternoon teas on your front porch. Special family times Aunt Eleanor would make sure to create to keep us connected.
We will greatly miss Eleanors strong, constant support in our lives, something we grew to depend on and of course our wee chats.
Safe journey sweet lady.
Much love and gentle hugs from The Fairs

First, my condolences to Richard, Janet, Liz and Greg as well as extended family.
I was a nephew of Eleanor’s by marriage. She was an amazing woman and a great friend over the years.
One of my first memories of Eleanor’s was on a visit to the earlier family home (greenhouse) on Lakeshore Rd in Port Dalhousie. She pointed out her father, Mr. Goodwin, in the backyard family garden and encouraged me to go out and pay him a visit. I was literally stupefied by his knowledge of gardening: pruning and grafting techniques of the various plants there. The conversation segued to the conflict in the Middle East. Again, I was gobsmacked by his knowledge of world politics. He was in his mid-nineties. Eleanor was truly the ‘apple of that tree’. Even in her mid to late nineties she had the mental agility of a much younger person.
I brought Eleanor a pint of raspberries every summer and fall over the years from our family garden. I was always sent away with a sampling of produce from her garden and was also told her detailed plans for the berries.
This past summer I brought her a pint of berries as usual, but she did not answer her door, so I left the pint on the left-over produce table outside. MISTAKE! Very soon afterwards, I got a phone call from Eleanor telling me to call first so we could have a little chat. She was always curious about other people’s lives.
This past fall I phoned first, brought her a pint (raspberries) and came in for our wee chat. Sadly, little did I know, that this would be our last chat; again, sadly, little did I know that this pint of raspberries was the last from our garden as we moved shortly afterwards. I can’t think of a more fitting end to our garden than to give Eleanor the final pint after many hundreds of pints harvested over the years.
Eleanor will be sorely missed by many. She was all class: warm, welcoming and a joy to be around. She was a true friend and I loved her dearly. Rest well my friend.

I grew up a few houses from Eleanor and without fail, every Halloween she would dress up as a witch and scare us all while we trick or treated. Such a fun memory that inspired me as an adult to endeavor to create such memories for the neighborhood children who come to see my holiday displays.
Thanks for the fun Eleanor!!
