Obituary of Donald Stephen Green

In Loving Memory of Donald Stephen Green
(February 25, 1952 – January 7, 2025)

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Donald Stephen Green, affectionately known as Deter, Donnie, and Homer, on January 7, 2025. Don passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with illness.

Don was a fighter and a warrior, a devoted husband, a proud father, a cherished grandfather, and a friend to many. His kind and generous spirit, coupled with his quick wit and humor, left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

Don is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate, Kathy Green (née Smith), and his son, Chris Green (Stephanie). He was the adoring grandfather of Mason and Kira, who brought immense joy to his life. Don treasured every moment spent cheering on his grandchildren in their sports, sharing cuddles, and making funny faces that sparked endless laughter.

He was a dear brother to Mike and Kelly and a loving brother to Cathy and Debbie. Don was also a cherished brother-in-law and lifelong friend of 50 years to David Swindley and brother-in-law to Mary Jo Swindley (née Smith). Known as "Uncle Don," he held a special place in the hearts of his nephews, Mike and Matthew Swindley, Ryan and Trevor Farris, Blair and Brandon Lobsinger, Jordin and Dallas Green, and Cameron and Kelsey Green, all of whom shared in his life’s journey.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Christina Green, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Catharine and Mike Smith, whose love and guidance shaped his life.

Don was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s of Assumption Church, where his faith and fellowship were central to his life.

For 32 years, Don dedicated himself to his work at General Motors, providing for his family and earning the respect of his colleagues. He was also a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan, sharing countless hours with his son Chris cheering on their team and celebrating their love for Josh Allen and Jim Kelly.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Eli Rabin for his exceptional care and support throughout Don’s journey, as well as Dr. Ragad Rawoof, whose kindness and compassion brought comfort to Don and his family. Dr. Rawoof’s thoughtful calls to check on the family even after Don’s care will never be forgotten.

Special thanks are also extended to Diane Westveer and to Ken and Cathy Lobsinger for their constant visits and companionship, which brightened Don’s days during his hospital stays.

Don found joy and peace at Cedar Beach Campsite at Golden Lake, a place that held countless treasured memories.

The family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to the Niagara Health Team in 5B at St. Catharines Hospital. Their compassion and care made a difficult situation more bearable and will forever be remembered.

The family will receive friends at the George Darte Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 585 Carlton St. on Saturday, January 18th from 10am. A Final Tribute for Donald will follow in the Ceremony Room of the funeral home at 12, noon.

Donations made in Don's memory to Niagara Health System - St. Catharines Site or Therapy Tails would be appreciated by his family.

Don’s love, strength, and humor will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, Don. You will be forever missed but never forgotten.
