Obituary of Frances Mestek

It is with immeasurable sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and cherished friend. Frances Mestek (nee Flus) left us on December 19th, 2024 leaving an everlasting mark of her generous and nurturing spirit on all those she loved and encountered.

To Frances, family was her greatest treasure. Her journey of love and devotion began as a sister to Gloria Mestek (Tony), Mary Gerden (John), Vic Flus (Marina), Anne Flus, Tony Flus (Marlene), and Kathy Flus.  In 1954, Frances emigrated from Slovenia with her mother and siblings to reunite with their father after the war, beginning a new chapter in Canada. It was there she met the love of her life and devoted husband Frank, and together they built a beautiful family, raising their son John Mestek (Joanne) and daughter, Joanne Morris (Des). Frances worked for many years at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in the pediatrics ward and in the Central Supply Room (CSR), where her compassion and care touched countless lives along with forming lifelong friendships with many of the nursing staff. Her home was a haven of love and warmth and she managed to juggle the demands of work and family with grace and fortitude.

After the loss of her beloved husband in 1990, her love for her family only deepened as she became a proud grandmother to five grandchildren: Taylor, Jeffrey, Abbey, Emily and Matthew. Frances fully embraced her role as a grandmother, showering her grandchildren with endless love and care. They became the light of her life, as she created cherished memories for them with sleepovers, time spent together after school, holiday traditions, family vacations and celebrations made special by her incredible baking and ability to bring everyone together. Frances was a woman of immense generosity and kindness, never hesitating to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. A special thank you to the staff at West Hills Care Centre for the outstanding care that was provided to Frances over the last two years. Her warmth, resilience, and unwavering love will forever be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.
