Wing, Arthur Stuart
July 4, 1935 – Aug. 17, 2024
Peacefully and surrounded by his beloved family, Art passed away on August 17, at the age of 89.
He will be lovingly remembered by sons Joseph (Debbie) Wing (Meghan, Travis), Michael Wing, Christopher (Wendy) Wing (Stuart, Rachel), step daughter Lynn (Jeff) Henderson (Jenny, Katie), step son-in-law Kevin Thorsen (Jacqueline, Jon), and brother Bob (Hugette).
He was predeceased by his wives Jacquie Herman (2022) and Marjorie Pancheff (1990), son David (1984), stepdaughter Michele Thorsen (nee: Herman, 2023), mother Beatrice Wing Pereda (1972), father Robert Wing (1944), step father Raymond Pereda (2019), and step mother Gladys Pereda (2017).
Art led an accomplished life as a leader in education and Rotary.
He attended Stamford Collegiate, University of Western Ontario-Ivey HBA, and University of Toronto-College of Education and MEd.
What began as an inadvertent opportunity to “try teaching for a year” led to a distinguished career in education. He began teaching Business at St.Catharines Collegiate (1960-66), also working with the rowing and football teams. He was subsequently at Lakeport (teacher, 1966-67), Collegiate (vice-principal, 1967-69), Grantham (principal, 1969-72), Collegiate (principal, 1972-77), and finished his career as a Superintendent of Education for the Lincoln County Board of Education (1977-94)
After retirement from education, he served as President of Marwing Services (1994-2019), consulting to various organizations, including the Niagara Parks Commission.
Art was equally active in community service leadership in the Niagara Region and beyond. Most notably, he was a member of the Rotary Club of St. Catharines for 50 years, serving as President (1991-92), District Governor (2005-06), and District Chair for the Rotary Foundation. He led the Rotary group study exchange to India in 2003 and was a recipient of the Rotary International Service Award. He was also a Board member and President of Family and Children’s Services of the Niagara Region, Founding Chair and Board member of Contact Niagara, and a leader in the Early Years Action Group.
Notwithstanding his many professional accomplishments, Art’s greatest legacy is a lifetime of creating extraordinary memories with his family, friends, and colleagues throughout the world. He loved to travel, and never hesitated to jet off to Bulgaria, Bonita Springs, England, and countless other exotic destinations, making lifelong friends everywhere he went. However, most importantly he loved to attend his grandkids sporting events and activities. Art will be remembered as an incredibly selfless and loving Dad, Husband, and Dyado to his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank friends and family for all the love and support for our Dad over these last three years, especially Aunt Jo McDuffe. The family are very appreciative of the support and care of Dr. Wasserman and the staff of the Walker Family Cancer Centre as well as the incredibly compassionate and caring staff at Hospice Niagara.
