My first year at Ridley was also Jim’s (Mr. McLaughlin). Despite his best efforts, he did not transform me into an artist of any talent. But I very fondly remember how he was always irreverent when it came to rules. At that time, he drove a decommissioned police cruiser with heavy duty shock absorbers. That allowed him to wryly declare that the best way to take the speed bumps on Ridley’s main driveway was at top speed, which he hardly moderated as he blasted through the school’s main gates. His impish cheekiness left an indelible mark! Thank you Mr. McLaughlin. Rest in peace.

I remember the first day Mr. McLaughlin walked into art class in 1976. He was so big and he was so present, and he was smiling. He commanded our attention and he always gave us his attention. He was a warm, kind and generous human being and a great master and mentor and he encouraged me to try again and to live more fully. God really blessed me with his life and look forward to seeing him again in glory!

Siobhan, Nicola, Fiona, and Mrs. McLaughlin - I was neither taught nor coached by Jim, but I have many memories of him as a staple of Ridley life and a hugely positive influence on so many of us at such pivotal points in our lives. Enjoy the countless great memories you will have as his legacy lives on.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jim for many years, starting from when he was my art teacher in grade 8 in 1978, and after we reconnected when I started rowing again in the late 90s, and he'd started spending prodigious amounts of time at the rowing course both with wife Maureen and daughter Siobhan.
My all-time favourite Jim moment is one I will share now. A group of us were sitting around a table outside Scorecard Harry's in Port Dalhousie one evening during Henley. I believe Maureen was there, Nick Holmes, Jim, myself, and Kiwi coach Paul Westbury. I told the story of when I first met Jim in 1978. The previous year at Ridley, Maureen had been my art teacher and was FANTASTIC! Then Jim came along the following year, and had the audacity to assign us....homework. Imagine that! HOMEWORK! In....ART!!! The first bit of homework I got, I forgot about it until the last minute, and then quickly drew a stick man and handed it in. Unsurprisingly, I received a failing grade for the assignment. While laughter ensued at the story, I looked at Jim. He had a mischievous grin, took a big puff of his ever-present cigar, and said, in his brilliant Scottish accent: "Achhhh....ya deserved it!!!!!"
Rest In Peace, Sir. You were a true character!!
Condolences to Maureen and the Family.

Mr. McLaughlin was my art teacher at Ridley. I don’t remember which years but I very much enjoyed his teaching, personality, and gentle encouragement.
I greatly respected him. I remember one major project that was a good part of the course grade and I designed an ambitious water fountain in plexiglass with electric pump, circulating water, colored lights and meant as a wall hanging. I never finished it. I thought I was doomed, but Mr. McLaughlin gave me an A and told me it was a great vision and creative. I think he liked me though because I really didn’t get that far. If I were grading my accomplishment I would have been much harsher. He wasn’t like that though. It wasn’t about structure, it was about heart.
Great fellow. I am very sorry to hear this news. Even more sorry that I didn’t stay in touch.
Fair winds, Jim
