I have fond memories of Capt.Bill Guy. Back in the late 70's I had the honour, as a student, working on the John A France. The good Capt. allowed this young deck hand up onto the Bridge and allowed me to wheel. I finished the season as a wheelsman. I remember a true Professional, calm under pressure. One of the best!

Bill was my older cousin and we were both born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have fond memories of being in his company as a youngster growing up in Halifax. My family subsequently moved to Ottawa, Ontario and I visited Bill and his family in St.Catherines with my patrents when I was a teenager. More recently Bill and I exchanged numerous phone calls. Bill was a very special person. After my father passed away late in 1999 Bill made a point of calling my elderly Mother every Monday night until his illness prevented him from doing so. Our family were very appreciative of this.

I was wheelsman for Capt. Guy on the John A. France from April though August in 1975. He was the best Capt. I ever worked under. He was a great shiphandler, had a great sense of humor however was strict with his crew when he needed to be. He always gave anyone a chance 'to work their way up' - I was 19 at the time. The France had 2 'baratone' steam whistles which were beautiful to hear. One morning on the 4 to 8 watch in the St. Clair River I noticed only one whistle was on (we had been in fog the night before in Lake Huron with only 1 whistle for fog) and I commented that she sounded better with both whistles on. Capt. Guy put the second whistle on and then wheeled around in his chair and asked if everything else was O.K. or would I like him to make me a coffee..? After a girlfriend had left me that summer he was like a father teasing me that 'she had missed her chance' - when I would mop out the wheelhouse he would tease me telling me that 'she really missed her chance...' - when I did pay off he warned me to watch out for her 'she'll try to get back with you now that you have your pockets full of money.' She did try and I heeded his advice. The very first time I steered the France was in the South Shore canal near Montreal. When I stepped behind the wheel Capt. Guy said ' you can see the middle as well as I can - keep her there'.
Capt. Guy was truly a great man. I realize this must be an extremely difficult time for your family but please take comfort in the fact that he treated all fairly and was loved by many. Please accept my most sincere condolences. Shaun Smith.

Our deepest sympathy to the Guy family. We will all miss him.
I sailed as his first mate for 2 years on the John A. France and was the BEST Captain I have sailed under. Dela and Zubin recall his warmth when visiting his ship.
May he rest in eternal Peace.
