Obituary of Stew McCarthy
Stewart Arthur McCarthy “Sgt Stew”, passed peacefully on Thursday, April 4th 2024 at Garden City Manor in his 82nd year. Son of the late Gerald Arthur and Mona McCarthy; brother of the late Geraldine (Harry) Turner; Beloved and cherished husband of Christina McCarthy (nee Johnston), the late Sharon McCarthy 1989; Father of Stewart Scott (Lynn) McCarthy; the late Brenda McCarthy; Shari Ann (Mark) King; Grandfather of Sydney Sharon (Arthur) King; Great-grandfather of Johnny Arthur King and brother-in-law of Sharleen (Alan) Johnston.
Stew worked for Niagara Regional Police for 30 years and loved going to work every day. Stew had a passion for planes which encouraged him to acquire his pilot’s license. In his early days of policing, he would often would fly and pick up prisoners from other Provinces. Initiated into Freemasonry on June 2nd 1965 and Worshipful Master of Niagara No2 Lodge in 2008. Stew was Chairman of the NOTL Christmas Parade Committee for many years. He also, along with his cousin Keith (Mary Lynn) Pidduck delivered Meals on Wheels. Stew loved farming and spending hours on his tractor working the fields on the family farm. When he was young, he entered into cow showing competitions at the 4H Club. Stew was an avid lover of animals, especially his dogs and will be sorely missed by his Bridget. Stew enjoyed playing poker with the ‘Old Farts Club of NOTL’ on Thursday afternoons.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Visitation for family and friends on Wednesday, April 10th 2024 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm with a Masonic Memorial Service to be held on Thursday, April 11th 2024 beginning at 10:30am followed by a Celebration of Stew’s life in the funeral home Ceremony room. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated by the family to the Alzheimer Society of Niagara or the Humane Society of Greater Niagara.
Stewart will be missed by his many friends and family as he touched many hearts.
