Obituary of Margaret Agnes MacAskill

June 17 1942 – March 23, 2024

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Margaret Agnes MacAskill (nee Blackie) on March 23, 2024 in her 82nd year.  Margaret fought courageously and passed peacefully knowing how much she was loved by her family and friends.

She is survived by the love of her life, her loving husband Roderick (Roddie) MacAskill with which she would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this month.

Theirs is a true love story, they met in 1963 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, instantly became best friends and soul mates, married in 1964 and moved to St. Catharines where they settled and raised their family together.  To her last day they still looked at each other like they were just married.

Margaret dedicated her life to her three children, Jean (Tom Kozela), Jane (Brian Babcock) and Jamie (Tracy Riselli). Nothing was more important to her than her grandchildren, that she loved endlessly Teddy (Curtis)Dancy, Justin Babcock (Hannah Upham), Danni Kozela (Hunter Ross) and Taylor MacAskill (Darynn Olyschlager).  Her great granddaughters Nova and Zaila Dancy brought a special sparkle to her eye and held a special spot in her heart.

She is survived by her siblings Marie Rabey, Thaddeus “Brother” (Janet) Blackie, and Leo (Maria) Blackie. She will be sadly missed by Roddie’s family; Richard Ahle, Corrine (Heckie) Stubbert, Melinda (Jackie) Mark, Nayland (Debbie), Murray (Jeanette), Paul (Jocelyn), Carrie (Tom), Glenn, and Terry (Corinna).   She will be remembered dearly by dozens of nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.   Always remember how much she loved you all.

Margaret is pre-deceased by her parents Thaddeus “Teddy” (1988) and Elizabeth (1967) Blackie and her in-laws Kenny (1976) and Jannie (2009) MacAskill. As well as her sisters-in-law Mary, Sylvia, Wanda, Dawn and her brothers-in-law Danny, Buddy, and Eric.

Margaret worked at Charterways/Laidlaw for 25 years as a school bus driver

Margaret was strong-willed and lovingly stubborn at times but had an enormous heart and endless love for her family and friends.  She was a beautiful person inside and out and made a deep impact on many lives. She will be forever missed.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Dr Timothy Tatzel and his staff for their care and support throughout her years. Special thanks to her medical team at the Walker Family Cancer Centre, St. Elizabeth’s, Care Partners, and Niagara Emergency Medical Services.

At Margarets request, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Walker Cancer Centre in her honour, would be greatly appreciated.  Please spend a little extra time with your family and squeeze them all a little tighter as it goes by too quick.
