Obituary of Murray Hunt

HUNT, Murray (radio broadcaster) Murray Hunt, of Fonthill, passed away at the age of 73 at the Welland Hospital on Friday, October 5, 2012 after a short illness. Murray was born on September 10, 1939 in Matheson, Ontario (near Timmins) to Norman (of Powassan, Ontario) and May (nee Watson) Hunt (of Themsford, Ontario). He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Gwen, on December 31, 2009. Surviving him is his daughter, Deborah, her husband, Chris Kapsimalis and his dear grandsons, Nicholas and Michael of St. Eustache, Quebec, as well as his sister Ruth and her husband John, of Lowbanks. He also leaves his uncle, David Watson of Ottawa, stepsons, Gary Ward and Rick Ward and their families, and his sister-in-law, Joan Matta and her son, George. Murray's absence has been felt by his beloved dogs, Buddy and Sam and his cats, Patches and Pookie and they will miss him dearly. Murray's career in radio broadcasting began almost 50 years ago, beginning locally and continuing during his enlistment with the RCAF. While with the RCAF, Military Police, he attained the rank of Corporal, serving both in Canada and West Germany. He returned to civilian life on local radio, CJRN, CHSC, CHOW, CJQR-FM and WXRL in Lancaster, NY. On November 5, 1981, Murray and Gwen began hosting a country music radio show (Vintage Country), which Murray continued broadcasting until August of this year when he became ill. Murray and Gwen were well-known for their many years in the travel industry. Murray will be missed by his many travel friends and his loyal Vintage Country listeners in both Canada and the U.S.A. A heartfelt thank you is sent to everyone who visited Murray in the hospital and all who sent him messages and cards of encouragement. The co-operation, care and attention given to Murray during his stay in ICU and the Sixth Floor of the Welland Hospital was outstanding and the family wishes to thank everyone for their professionalism and compassion, especially Dr. Sobkowski and Dr. Gallab. Murray's family will receive friends at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St. on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Murray's life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow service. In lieu of floral tributes, Murray would appreciate donations to the Humane Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
