Obituary of Pa. Gabriel Osamagioghomwewi Obazee

With gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing to glory of Pa. Gabriel Osamagioghomwewi Obazee on January 12th, 2024 at the age of 89. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his beloved children and grandchildren.

Gabriel was predeceased by his beloved wife Monica Uwazogie Obazee (nee Aisien) in 1999.  Beloved father of Mary-Theresa Ugiomotiti (Uyilawa) Usuanlele and Rosaria Iguehiduwa (Oyetunji) Obazee-Oke. Cherished grandfather of Osarhiuyimen, Osamuedemen, Osayuware, Osazomwonogie and Izirouwa. A generous and loving man, Gabriel opened his home to many young people serving as foster father and mentor. He leaves behind several brothers, sisters, cousins and dear friends.

Gabriel was a lifelong teacher, beloved by all his students. Over the course of his career, he taught in many schools in Sokoto and Benin City, Nigeria including College of Education Ekiadolor and University Demonstration Secondary School. An ardent scholar and proponent of the Edo language and heritage, he authored several articles and books on Edo language.

A dedicated Roman Catholic, Gabriel lived his faith fervently and enjoyed teaching catechism, and visiting the sick and elderly in nursing homes. He loved gardening, traveling, singing, and listening to music.

The family will receive guests at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St, St. Catharines, ON L2M 4Y1 on Thursday January 25th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Friday January 26th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., with Vigil Prayers at 3 p.m. "To honour the joyful life Gabriel lived, we ask invited guests to wear a touch of white as a symbol of celebration."

 A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Alfred Roman Catholic Church on Saturday January 27th at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
