Maurice Demers

Obituary of Maurice Charles Demers

It is with sadness and abiding love that our family shares the news that Maurice Charles Demers passed away peacefully with family by his side at the St. Catharines Hospital on October 1, 2023. Maurice, born and raised in Toronto, is predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Victoria “Kewpie” as well as his brother Robert “Bob” and his sister Jeanette.

Maurice is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 58 years, his brother Victor (Joy), sons Maurice “Moe” (Lynn) and Stew as well as his daughters Marie (Colin) and Theresa (John). A very special mention to Donnell and his cousin Mike for all of the love and support they’ve also provided over the years. Maurice was also a proud grandfather “Poppy” to Jillian, Mitchell, Charlie and Elliott as well as a favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews.

As an expression of his Catholic faith and community mindedness, Maurice played many roles over the years such as with the Knights of Columbus and as a Trustee on the Lincoln Country Roman Catholic Separate School Board. Maurice had a life-long love of the outdoors and music. He enjoyed taking the family camping and many great years of cottage life. Maurice was proud and grateful to have connected to his Indigenous heritage in recent years.

Early in his career, Maurice was an active member of CUPE in Toronto where he played a leadership role. He was also a devoted social worker in St. Catharines for the majority of his work life including many years at Family and Children Services.

A special thanks to all who provided medical care to Maurice – from the Organ Transplant Unit at the University Hospital in London to the team at the St. Catharines Hospital and the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital including countless PSWs, nurses and, in particular, Doctor Rammohan and Doctor Harb. Equally, a kind thanks to the Roman Catholic clergy for all of their support through the years.

In accordance with Maurice’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Catherine on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Feel welcome to greet the family there at 10:00. Immediately following the mass, interment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery will take place and a reception will be held at 12.30 p.m. at Upper Deck Taphouse and Grill, 218 Martindale Road, St. Catharines, ON.  If needed, overflow parking is available across the street in the Royal Bank plaza.

Memorial donations to the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital would be appreciated. Donate to Hotel Dieu Shaver here.
