Obituary of Pauline Marie Leonard

LEONARD, Pauline Marie (nee Schall)

Passed away peacefully at United Mennonite Home, on September 22, 2023, at the age of 95. Predeceased by her loving husband Captain Charles John Leonard (2002), her parents William and Mary Schall (Lach), and her brother William James Schall. Pauline will be missed by her nephew William John Schall in Michigan, her cousin Margie Lach Stephen in Arkansas, her sisters-in-law in Ontario, and especially by her long-time family friend, John Ashworth, who looked after Pauline and helped her right to her last days. Pauline was born and grew up in Michigan, and worked as a telephone operator until she met her future husband, a ship’s captain on the Great Lakes, Captain John Leonard. They married and moved to Canada and settled in their golden years to the Port Dalhousie area of St. Catharines. They were members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, even though they were not Ukrainian, because of their love of the church services and the singing,. Pauline was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League and volunteered as the church accountant for 20 years. She loved animals, especially her dogs, Baxter and Pookie. Pauline’s one other love was tending to, and demonstrating her North Tonawanda Military Band Organ at Balls Falls and at other fairs and exhibitions. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines, on Tuesday September 26, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, with Panachyda at 7:00 pm. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday September 27, 11:00 am. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Church, with Rite of Committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In memory of Pauline donations may be made to the Humane Society of Greater Niagara Animal Clinic, or to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Church-Building Fund.
