Obituary of Mark Alan Janecek

Mark Alan Janecek

December 24, 1972 - September 16, 2023

St. Catharines, Ontario

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Mark Alan Janecek, child of God, who was quietly taken to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 16, 2023.

Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Rachel of 28 years, and their incredible daughters,  Madeline and Alexandra who were Mark’s greatest treasure. Dearly loved by his parents Robert and Jean Janecek; siblings Rob Janecek (Dawn), Jennifer Dunham (Jim). His mother-in-law Elsje Zwart Klajnscek (Rich); sister-in-law Karen Zwart Hielema (Edgar), brother-in-law Joel Zwart (Jennifer). Uncle Mark to Sean and Julie Janecek, Kate and Jack Dunham, Peytra and James Hielema, Anna, Simon and Elliot Zwart.

Many aunts, uncles and cousins. Dear friends from many chapters and communities of Mark’s life. Newly discovered relatives in the village of Týnec in the Czech Republic.

Mark was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He went to Calvin University in 1992, was married in 1995 and graduated in 1996. Mark and Rachel moved to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where their children were born. In 2007 they moved their young family to St. Catharines, Ontario, and thus began the Canada chapter.

Mark was a lover of history and built a career in technology that lasted for over 25 years. He worked most of his career from a home office and was an incredibly dedicated and involved Dad in the lives of his girls. Mark sat on many boards and committees and was committed to excellence in everything he did.

In 2013 Mark began to research his Janecek  family history. This was an extensive project that resulted in discovering a whole village of relatives he ended up visiting in 2019 and again in 2023.  This journey was such a gift and brought him much joy. He often remarked that in looking for his family of the past, he discovered a whole new part of his family in the present. Mark was an incredible husband, father, son, friend and colleague.
