Obituary of Dr. Juan Amadeo Fernandez

Professor FERNANDEZ- Juan Amadeo

It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Juan, at the age of 92 years old. Peacefully, on Thursday, July 13th, 2023 at the St. Catharines General Hospital in the presence of his loving wife of 59 years, Hortensia, and family by his side.

Loving father to John (Karen) and Joe, devoted grandfather to Jessica, Meghan (Michael), and Alex, and beloved great-grandfather to Hayden, Sofia, Shea, and Jake. Predeceased by his brothers Joaquin and Manolo, and his sister Monserrat.  

Born in Catalunya, Spain, Juan was one of the original seven faculty members at Brock University and a respected academic. Initially a Professor of Spanish, Juan also became the director of the Romance Language department in what is now Brock's Hispanic and Latin American Studies program. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Barcelona, a B.A. in Law from the University of Madrid, and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the State University of New York.

Juan's passion was academia, and his joy was his family. His contributions to education during his 32-year tenure at Brock University were significant, and he was a beloved professor to many, leaving an indelible mark on the education of thousands.

Loved immensely by his family, Juan enjoyed spending his time outside his home and cottage in Sauble Beach, watching the news, and with his family and friends where countless memories were made over cups of espresso. 

Juan will be remembered for his dignified and steadfast nature, dedication to his family, and life teachings that have inspired so many.  

We will keep you in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME 585 Carlton Street. Cremation has taken place, and a time of visitation will begin on Monday, July 24th from 11:00 am-1:00 pm with a funeral service at 1:00 pm. If so desired, donations to the Diabetes Association can be made in Juan's memory.
