Obituary of Ronald Richard Holmberg
Holmberg, Ronald Richard, passed away peacefully at Niagara Health, St. Catharines Site on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 in his 87th year. Ron was predeceased by his wife, Joanne in 1999 and his son, Jon in 2000. Lovingly remembered by his daughter, Kari and her husband James, and daughter-in-law Julie. Best and beloved Grandpa to, Evan, Mallory, Ben, Sam and Noah. Born in Sault St. Marie, and raised in Sudbury, Ron was predeceased by his eight brothers and sisters, but Uncle Ron will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and their families. Ron was a High School teacher in St. Catharines for over 30 years, starting his career in the 1960s at the St. Catharines Collegiate and retiring from his beloved Merritton High School a few years before it closed. Dad loved teaching and his students, refusing to become a principal so he could stay in the classroom. He was always an athlete, whether hockey player, avid cross-country skier, 5K runner and in later years, power-walker. He was able to make anything out of wood, and could DIY like a pro, but was often bested by a gas-powered motor. He left his family with a love of music, nature and as a good Finnish boy, winter.
Heartfelt thanks to the 4A nursing staff for making Dad’s last weeks comfortable. As per Ron’s wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines, and cremation has taken place. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Niagara Region in Ron’s memory.
