Maddie,
It's been years since we played soccer, years since I've heard your infectious laugh. You were taken way too soon, and I think about you often. May you continue to rest in peace.

"Maddie in the Hood" Maddie in my heart.
I was lucky enough to become close friends with Maddie over the past few years. We met during highschool, at Sir Winston Churchill, and as just as easily as it is to say hello, a friendship formed. Every day at school I hoped that I'd see Maddie in guidance or sitting outside. She'd message me sometimes just to tell me to meet her outside. I'd see her walk up almost every day wearing her headphones and a huge smile.
One of my best memories of Maddie was one we shared just before Christmas last year. We were sitting in my living room, deciding on a movie to watch. Maddie insisted that we watch a Christmas movie, to get us into the holiday spirit. I sat on the floor reading off all of the movie names, until Maddie stopped me at Christmas with the Kranks. I don't know if I've ever seen her laugh as hard as I did that day. The botox scene was her favourite.
I'll never forget the last day that I saw her. The last week of school, Maddie walked into guidance with her beautiful smile and said, "Whoa! You have brown hair!". She hadn't seen me in a while, and she was used to looking for my firey red hair. After talking at the school for an hour or so, we got on a bus to downtown. Maddie and I spent the day talking and laughing, with no real destination, and she never even complained about how bad the heat was-- She never complained about much.
I have lost a friendship that will never be replaced, but I will always have the memories. Every conversation, whether it was about school, society, literature, music, or just us being goofy... Each and every one of those conversations have changed me.

Colleen and Rob, I am still reeling from reading about Maddie in the Calgary Herald this morning. This is not how I would have liked to hear how your family has been doing since I last saw you both, many years ago. But in reading about Maddie and seeing her photo, it was so, so easy to see Colleen's quick humour, smile and laughter. As a parent of a 19 year old son (who is going to Dalhousie!), I ache with sadness for both of you. I wish I could find more sympathetic words, but please know I am thinking of you lots right now.

Know that you all will be in my thoughts and prayers for a long time. Take care of yourselves and take some comfort in knowing how much you all are loved by so many people.

Colleen and family, there is never any way to rationalize or make sense of the tragic loss of a child. Perhaps comfort will come in realizing how much of a legacy that Maddie left you and all whom were touched by her despite her short time here. Though I did not know her, it is easy to see that she was a very special person and had such tremendous potential for goodness. I believe that we arrive here for a reason and to learn the life lessons that will help us achieve a connection with all that is divine in the universe. Maddie must have learned very quickly as now her lessons have prepared her to be a guide for all of us who are still here. I know that there are angels who walk with us and help to lead us through this journey on earth. I believe that Maddie's journey is not just to be an angel but to serve at a higher level as an Archangel. As such, I know that she will hold her family very tightly and wrap you all in her wings. She will be ever present to lead you, to guide you, to support you, to keep you safe and to help you know peace. The place where she is has no pain but only bright loving light. Though her physical presence has left you, her soul has not. May we all find comfort in knowing that she is there, talk with her, feel her beside you and know that as always she is there with you. The days ahead will hold challenges and feelings that may at times be overwhelming, let those feelings pass on through you and remember the smiles, the laughter, the love and all the wonderful memories of a very special young woman. Her legacy lives on in all with whom Maddie had a connection. With much warmth and caring,
Sharon

Euchre Tournament
Myself and a few graduate students of Brock University participated in a charity euchre tournament with Maddie. This is my fondest memory I have of Maddie because of her unforgettable sarcasm and humour she shared with us that day. We laughed and joked around with Maddie throughout the entire night, and in my eyes Maddie deserved the most valuable and most improved player of the night. She came to that tournament only practicing slightly with her mom before hand and still sat down at each hand that night like a true champion. I will never forget that night and I am so grateful that I had the chance to meet Maddie and I will forever honour her unforgettable sense of humour and the joy she brought to her family and friends.

The moment I knew we would be friends!
I believe I had been working at Tim Horton†™s for about a year when you first started there. The first words you spoke to me were sarcastic, though almost all the words you spoke were sarcastic or a deadpan and I loved you for it. I can't remember the first words you spoke to me at the time they seemed insignificant, however if I could go back I would have ingrained them in my memory never to be forgotten. I wasn't quite sure how to take your personality at first however, you always followed a sarcastic remark with a smile and I knew you were a person I would be friends with. You along with select others made working at Tim Horton†™s fun and never a dull moment, I remember always stealing your phone on break because you had better games then I did, It got to the point where you would just tell me where to find it before I even asked because you were sick of me bothering you. Maddie I didn't know you long and we didn't hangout everyday together but you were loyal, kind and I am so honored that I got a chance to meet you and get to know the real you, even if for a short while. R.I.P you will be missed and forever remembered, Love Romancia

Our hearts are broken because of how your life ended. We take great comfort in the poem your Mother posted. My son Tim and husband Mike met your beautiful daughter Maddie a few months ago when Tim went to look at the room for rent where Maddie was staying. We knew that the other renter was a female and Tim wasn't sure if he would like sharing a place with her or not. When they came home all I heard about for days was what a fantastic person this room mate was how beautiful and kind and special she was. They talked for a short time but it took no time for both Tim and Mike to realize that she was a very genuine and kind person. It wasn't known if she was going to go into residence or not but Tim hoped she would stay. Maddie was the topic of many of our conversations and I felt like I had met her as well. I wanted you to know that Maddie made a difference in two peoples' lives who had only met her for a short time.I'm sure you were so very proud of her. We were really deeply saddened to hear the news.I hope these words have provided some comfort to you at this very difficult and painful time. You are in our prayers.

I am just that much more determined to take the work that you and that Maddie I am sure would have wanted done to another level. We will keep you in our hearts in the next few days and may you find the strength to continue.

Crepe Shenanigans
While I was staying at Maddie's house one weekend we woke unimaginably early and decided to make breakfast. We thought it would be a good idea to make crepes, because neither of us had made them before and why not experiment. I have no idea how we got so messy but I was trying to get batter out of my clothes and hair for the rest of the weekend. We didn't have enough eggs but figured we could go without the 3rd and just add more milk. Our crepe took so long to cook and did not look the least bit edible. But we were so excited and hungry so we each had a bite. That was the worst idea ever, the eggs or milk must have been expired! Even the tremendous about of syrup on the crepe was not allowing us to choke this thing down. Even Taz the dog who eats everything growled at it. Maddie wanted to bury it in the yard and forget about it forever. Needless to say we went to McDonalds for breakfast. In such a short time knowing Maddie I have a great amount of happy and funny moments to remember. I am so deeply grateful to have known her and trust that when we all reminisce about our memories, she will be laughing with us.

I believe I had been working at Tim Horton’s for about a year when you first started there. You along with select others made working at Tim Horton’s fun and never a dull moment, I remember always stealing your phone on break because you had better games then I did, It got to the point where you would just tell me where to find it before I even asked because you were sick of me bothering you. Maddie I didn't know you long and we didn't hangout everyday together but you were loyal, kind and I am so honored that I got a chance to meet you and get to know the real you, even if for a short while. R.I.P you will be missed and forever remembered, Love Romancia

Simply Lovely
There are no words to explain how lovely Maddie was. For one of her birthdays, I gave her a cupcake recepe book and she loved it. Her happiness over something so small was very moving. However her thanks and smile wasn't enough for her. She baked cupcakes and served them to her family including me! I will never forget her delicious treats and her immense kindness. There are many memories that seem so vivid in my mind. We once had a "girls movie night" in BC on a trip visiting her family. I helped her with an art project, although she didn't need it. She had a great sense of humor and always made me feel welcome! She even attending multiple shows I sang at local restaurants. I will never forget her kindness towards me.
I want to thank Andrew and the Hood family for always making me feel so comfortable. You truly are a wonderful family. I will never forget your kindness and hospitality. You're in our thoughts and hearts. Maddie will always be remembered by so many. I can't even begin to imagine how many people she touched.
I hope that the words and support from family can give you some comfort in this time of unimaginable pain.
With love,
Lauren and the Merrick family
