Obituary of Maria Vogiatzis
Passed away peacefully at Garden City Manor on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at the age of 83. Loving wife of the late Konstantinos. Cherished mother to Eva (Joe) Miller and Kitsa (Frank) Statti. Proud grandmother of Chris (Rebecca), Stephen (Carley), Nick and Matteo and great-grandmother of Kiara. Dear sister to the late John (Brenda) and late Katholiki. Sister-in-law and aunt to many relatives in both Canada and Greece.
Maria was born on November 14, 1939 in Rhodes, Greece. She married her husband, Konstantinos on July 26, 1959. On April 15, 1966, the Vogiatzis family left Greece and sailed on the Queen Anna Maria ship to Canada. The family first lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake but eventually settled in St. Catharines. In 1971, Maria and her husband ran a 63-acre farm in Wainfleet for 2 years where they raised chickens, goats and pigs. In 1973, the family ran Surella’s Spaghetti House, across from Crystal Beach amusement park, for 16 years. Maria was a homemaker that took care of her husband and children. She was an excellent interior decorator with an impeccable home. She was an amazing cook and her specialty in the kitchen was Greek pastitsio and stuffed vegetables. Her summer days were spent landscaping her beautiful flower gardens which resulted in her winning the Trillium Residential Garden Award. Not only was she a specialist with her garden, she created beautiful floral arrangements and wreaths. Her “dirty” sense of humour and silly jokes often kept her family and friends laughing.
A special thank you to all the staff at Garden City Manor that took loving care of Maria since 2017, especially her PSWs Kathy (aka Sister), Tovah, Josh, Saul, Laura, Stacy and other too numerous to mention.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. The family wish to invite guests for a time of visitation from 7:00PM to 9:00PM with the First Thrice Holy Hymn Service\Trisagio will take place on Sunday March 19th at 8PM at the Funeral Home. The Second Thrice Holy Hymn Service\Trisagio will take place on Monday, March 20th, 2023 at 10:00AM., and will be followed by the Funeral Service at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church. The Third Thrice Holy Hymn Service\Trisagio and burial will occur after the Funeral Service at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church.
