The photos, the words left for their precious grandfather by Denise and Steven and the memories they shared filled our hearts with the love that you all possessed for this small but mighty man. He will be missed but his generosity, strength and hard working qualities will remain forever because they will live within all of you. Grace, I'm so glad you were able to be there for him, hope it gives you comfort. God bless you all.

Goodbye Nonno
An English poet from the 1800 called Alfred Austin once said †œShow me your garden and I shall tell you what you are†.
My Nonno had more tomato plants, more zucchini, more beans than he would have needed for a 10 year span, and yet every year he would always try to do more, every year he always had a basket of tomatoes ready for all of his friends or grew plants just for them, he did this without ever expecting anything back. This was his way to show his love and appreciation for the people he considered to be like family, because, since he decided to leave his home when he was only a young man, the only real family he had was his brother and all the different relationships he built here.
Since he was just a kid back in Italy working the land like the rest of his family, my Nonno knew this was not going to be enough to support his family or to build a strong family on his own. Soon after the war he decided to take on his first adventure in Belgium working in the coal mines 1000m deep, where it†™s so hot you only wear a cloth and you came out so black it would take hours to clear your skin. He did this for 6 years without ever complaining, he was actually happy he was able to support his family from home, paid for his sister†™s honey moon and for his sister†™s in law ticket to Argentina to join his brother, once again never asking for anything in return.
It was only when my grandmother convinced him he should get a job with less risk and that it would not compromise his health that he decided to change home once more. He then joined his younger brother in Thunder bay, Ontario where he would have had to take a 2 hour bus ride to work in the middle of the forest cutting trees. This time the harsh weather and the little work made his life and the one of my grandmother very miserable, if he dared say anything about the harsh conditions, his boss would dryly reply: †œYou no like? You go home!† And he knew very well that wasn†™t an option for him. But he wasn†™t ready to give up, he took his wife and his daughter and after failing moving back to Italy due to the precarious economic conditions there, he came back to Canada to find better luck here in St.Catharines where he met friends that were all in his same situation and that were all ready for anything to be able to sustain and help their families. Through these friends he finally found a stable full time job at Port Weller where he worked as a burner for 31 years, worked weekends, worked Easters, sometimes even Christmas, because deep inside he wanted his kids to have a better life than he did, he wanted his family to have options and not go through what he had to.
My Nonno wasn†™t a man very present during those years yet he was there when it truly mattered, yet he knew how to make someone feel safe and comfortable always with that contagious loud laugh and holding that glass full of wine up high, and that is how I want to remember him, and thank him for becoming a true example to follow in life by proving how much respect, love and hard work can move the world and the people around you and knowing that if I can be half the man he used to be there is nothing I can†™t do in this world and only good things can come. Goodbye Nonno I will never let you go. Steven.

Ciao Nonno
Ti voglio bene. Denise
