Mary Helen Gaida (nee Ohar) passed away peacefully the age of 69 with family by her side. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 40 years Steve Gaida, father Walter Ohar, mother Stella (Talajko), sister-in-law Alicia Ritchie and father and mother-in-law Nicolas and Margaret Gaida. Mary will be deeply missed by her sister Olga (Don) Pickett, brother-in-law’s Michael (Sophie) Gaida and Randy Ritchie, nieces and nephews; Steven, Stephanie and Matthew (Kristine) Pickett, Josh Ritchie, Trisha (Greg) Floris, John (Jen) Gaida and great niece and nephews; Cal, Lola and Mac Pickett, Lucy and Sydney Floris and August and Malachy Gaida.

Mary grew up in Kitchener, Ontario to proud immigrant parents; Stella and Walter Ohar. From a young age Mary was immersed in the Ukrainian Catholic church and enjoyed her youth spending summers at Camp Veselka and attending Mount Mary Academy in Ancaster. Mary collected many friends over the years and loved spending time up at the lake, travelling, listening to music and entertaining family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mary’s family physician Dr. Nancy Fung, Dr. Lee of the Firestone Institute of Respirology, Father Myroslaw Tataryn, Father Bohdan Choly, Father Jaroslaw (Jerry) Lazoryk, The Walker Cancer, and the St. Elizabeth Healthcare team who provided excellent palliative care. A heartfelt thankyou to all the friends and family that kept Mary in their thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace forever in our hearts

Visitation will be held at the George Darte Funeral Chapel, 585 Carlton St. St. Catharines on Wednesday from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm.  Panachyda will be held on Wednesday at 7 pm. A Divine Liturgy will be held on Thursday at 11 am at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Church 14 Rolls Ave., St. Catharines, followed by a Burial at Victoria Lawn Cemetery 431 Queenston Street, St Catharines. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held following the Burial at Club Italia, 2525 Montrose Rd, Niagara Falls.  

Donations in Mary’s honour can be made to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation in support of humanitarian aid www.cufoundation.ca
