It is with profound sadness that the family of Barbara McCarthy (nee Birkby) announce her sudden passing on November 10th, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Most beloved wife and best friend of 53 years to Edward McCarthy. Barbara will be lovingly and forever remembered by her children John (Hilary) McCarthy and Rachel McCarthy. Cherished grandma of Aven and Caelan McCarthy. Barb is survived by her sisters-in-law Liz Birkby, Marian Dobson, Barbara Hamilton and brothers-in-law Wally Clost, Gerry Dobson and Chuck Hamilton as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her brother Andy Birkby and her sister-in-law Marguerite Clost.
Barbara was born in England and came to Canada in 1965 to continue her teaching career in Saskatchewan and later in Ontario. It was here she met Ed in 1967 at NDSS, and they were married in July 1968. Barb was also a teacher at NDSS, a board member of NOTL Historical Society, Co-President of Canadian Cancer Society and a friend of Newark Neighbours. Barb will be remembered for her quick wit and for her love and devotion to her family.
In keeping with Barb’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be welcomed at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St, St. Catharines, on Monday, November 15 from 2pm –4pm and 6pm-8pm. A Celebration of Barb’s life will take place on Tuesday, November 16, in the funeral home ceremony room at 11 a.m.
Memorial donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Lincoln County Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.
