Obituary of Edda Iezzi

It is with profound sadness that the family of Edda Iezzi announce her peaceful passing, surrounded by family, on Tuesday October 19, 2021, at the age of 73 years.

She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Emidio.  Cherished mother of Diana (Oscar), Delia (Shawn), Debbie, Miranda (Doug).  Loving Nonna to Julian, Amelia, Melia and Jaida.  She will also be greatly missed by her beloved friend Phyllis.

She is also predeceased by her sisters Lidia (Benny), Liliana (Peter), Brother Tony and her parents Frank and Italia Perilli.  She will be greatly missed by all her numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edda was born in a small village in Abruzzo, Italy.  At the tender age of nine, along with her mother and siblings, she set sail for a better life in Canada.  Not knowing any English she attended school, graduated and went on to Teachers College.  She then met and married the love of her life Emidio in 1970.  She continued as a supply teacher until she decided to pursue her true calling in life, hairdressing.  She completed her training top of her class and continued her passion for over 50 years.

Edda loved and found beauty in everyone and everything.  She had the gift of gab and finding good deals. Edda was also a fierce competitor and anyone who played cards with her knew she was a force to be reckoned with.  Her motto was “Winning isn’t everything, wanting to is!” She enjoyed her Saturday night poker with friends/family, Wednesday night Bingo and playing her luck on scratch and lottery tickets.  She was a devoted member of Club Roma’s Women’s Auxiliary Club for over 50 years, where her parents were the founding members, and was proud to celebrate her Italian heritage.

Family and friends were near and dear to Edda’s heart and were always welcomed in her home where she could make a feast fit for a king.   She was an Iron chef in the kitchen, cooking up her mind-blowing lasagna, gnocchi, and eggplant parmesan.  She took great pride in teaching her children and grandchildren all the Italian traditions and recipes from past generations.

Her daughters will be forever thankful for her courage, compassion, unconditional love and most of all fighting with grace till the end.  We take great comfort in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, her siblings, parents and cherished friends and is at peace.

We wish to give special thanks to Dr. Levesque, Dr Bokhari and the nursing staff at Walker Family Cancer Centre for their gentle and kind care.  Also, forever grateful to the Hospice Niagara team who went above and beyond with the care given to Edda.

Our mother lived her life fully just like her favorite song she would always be singing:

“Those Were the Days” by Mary Hopkins:

Those were the days my friend

We thought they’d never end

We’d sing and dance forever and a day

We’d live the life we choose

We’d fight and never lose

For we were young and sure to have our way…
