Obituary of Gweneth Elsie Minaker
Passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 18 at home at the age of 69. Beloved wife of Colin Hignett for 47 years. Loving mother of Harrison Hignett (Terezinha) and Catherine Major (Daniel). Cherished Nana of Theodore and William Hignett and Valerie Major. Survived by her sister Martha Abra (Keith Speck) and brother Harry Minaker. In her life Gweneth had three passions: family, teaching and travel. She started working as a primary school teacher but quickly moved to special education. She devoted her career to those who struggled to learn and those who excelled at it. She created a program to help children learn to read which at one point was used by all of the Thames Valley School Board. In addition she spent many fulfilling years running a gifted program. After Gweneth retired as a vice principal, she developed a new passion for buying and renovating student rental properties. Throughout her life, she travelled around the world with her family, visiting over 90 countries. She maintained connections with former colleagues and her many friends after retirement. Gweneth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family, helping to teach her grandchildren to read and supporting her children through their careers and life.
The family will be holding a private graveside service with immediate family. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Memorial donations in Gweneth's honour may be made to Plan International, Doctors without Borders or a charity of your choice.
