John Sitak

Obituary of John Sitak

It is with heavy hearts to announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, John Sitak, after a brave 18-month battle with cancer. His strong faith supported him in his struggles and ultimately gave him peace.

John will be forever remembered by his wife, Sandra, his two sons, Tom (Paula) and Joel, his daughter-in-law, Pamela, his step-daughter, Ashley Clayton (Tsilavo Ralandison), his brother, George (Joan), his sister, Anne Hunka, his six grandchildren, Jack, Jake, Kate, Ally, Joseph and Henry, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Susie Marcov.

John was born in Kapuskasing and raised in the Welland area. His parents came to Canada from Slovakia, a country that he loved and visited whenever he could to spend time with his relatives.

John was a beloved teacher in St. Catharines. His career started at Prince Philip Public School, then (the former) McArthur Public School, and ended at Ferndale Public School, where he taught design and technology for 25 years. John served on the OPSTF executive for many years and was proud recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award in 1992.

After retiring from teaching in 1994, John was fortunate to pursue many of his passions. Most days were spent in his garage covered in sawdust, working on various woodworking projects. John was a talented craftsman. He created bedroom suites (7) and other furniture pieces and could refurbish almost anything. At the end of the school day he was dedicated to refereeing volleyball matches at local schools and adult recreational leagues. He was a member of the Niagara District Board of Volleyball Officials for many years and was a Board member for several of those. He enjoyed being part of the action and doing his part to ensure fair play.

John also enjoyed serving the local community in a volunteer role. For several years, John volunteered at Central Community Church and at Hospice Niagara where he and Sandra have made lifelong friends.

John’s favourite season was summer because he could spend the most time at the cottage in Restoule. It was his happy place. When he was not cutting the grass or repairing something, he enjoyed having bonfires with family (and the mosquitoes) and cruising the lake on the pontoon boat.

During the colder months of the year, John and Sandra traveled the world, visiting almost every continent either as a couple or with their travel buddies. His favourite destination was Israel where he was baptized in the Jordan River. Ashley’s wedding in Madagascar was also a highlight.

John’s compassion, creativity, generosity, perseverance and optimism will be forever remembered and cherished by his family, friends, former colleagues, and students.

Sincere thank you to the Walker Cancer Clinic and a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Niagara for the compassionate, loving care they gave John while in their care.
