To all of Marina's family:
Marina was one of our family of volunteers at Birthright Niagara for many years. She was a valued, dedicated and reliable presence in our office. I so enjoyed knowing and working with her. She was a no nonsense lady with a grand sense of humour who was straight up in expressing her views. She was kind, supportive and caring and I am so sorry for your great loss.
Sincerely
Rita Dillon

Dear Donna & John, Liz & Rob, Tracey & Joe, Ken — and all the grandchildren, too: I am feeling very heavy of heart as I write this note of sympathy to you as you endure the loss of a special woman in your life, a cherished mother(-in-law) and grandmother, Marina. She has joined John and Louanne — not to mention her siblings and other family members — in an eternity where she will be, we pray, rewarded for her labours on earth. I personally grieve for Marina because I had the privilege (and that’s the word I want to use here) of knowing her and exchanging many a conversation with her since 1984, the year I was assigned to Star of the Sea Parish. It wasn’t too long before I met up with your parents (and other relatives) and began to notice just how involved they were in parish life, how attached to their church they were. Marina was a dedicated and effective minister of God’s word, sharing the Sunday texts as a reader at Mass. Indeed, Sunday Eucharist was for Marina and John a very necessary part of Schenck family life — and they made sure to introduce each of you to a life of faith as well. I believe they did a splendid job at this, because I experienced firsthand many a family event in company with you. Although Bishop John O’Mara was “on the scene” for your weddings and baptisms (and yes, funerals), still you made sure to include me. Over the years, I received only gracious words from your mother — maybe, yes, she had to “tone down” your dad once in a while, but she was his solid support and mainstay. I would never describe Marina as an individual who drew attention to herself; rather, she was a quiet but most diligent worker when it came time to assist with parish events. She was visible at almost every function the church had and she did her part, but always she did so without fanfare. As you well know, she chose her words well and was not one to be extravagant with her comments — she said what had to be said, charitably and affirmatively. She did her part to “cheer me on” in my ministry, and I have a particular place reserved for her in my heart. I am deeply saddened to learn of her death and how it occurred. I can certainly grasp how it must been for her to lose Louanne (let alone your father) and never quite “recover” from that. While I think with love of each and every one of you now in your time of grief, I can honestly say that your mother(-in-law) and grandmother cherished the family she had; she always spoke glowingly to me about you (but I also know for myself how awesome you all are as members of a proud Catholic family). If there’s anything I can do for you in the coming days, weeks, and months in arranging a proper farewell for Marina, do not hesitate to contact me. This grace-filled woman has left an indelible impression on me, and I will greatly miss her presence at various gatherings. However, I will be keeping her in my prayers, for sure, and remembering years well spent with her and the entire Schenck clan. Love to you, (Fr.) Peter R.

The Sheppard Family would like extend their deepest condolences and heartfelt love to the entire Schenck family. Over 60 years of friendship and memories have endured for this remarkable woman. My parents had Saturday night dinners with John and Marina for as long as we can remember. Also many memories of July 1st fireworks and hot summer days swimming in their pool. We will all miss Marina so very much. This was no ordinary life. This was a life well lived and well loved...a life that will be deeply missed.

Aunt Marina always baked SURPRISES into our birthday cakes..usually coins. And I will NEVER forget the "tattle tail" she made and pinned to our butts if we tattled on somebody! She will be missed. Love to my cousins and family. Theresa VanKralingen (Winterbottom)

My heart goes out to all Marina’s children and their spouses,, grandchildren, nieces and nephews who have become my friends over the years. You have had more than your fair share of loss over the past 18 months. I remember Marina’s smile - strong and steady through her own pain and losses. She has been reunited with her beloved John and daughter Louanne. With that image her smile is even brighter now in my mind. Hugs to all who were welcomed into her home and to her table.
