Obituary of Stanley Thomas Bayley

Stanley Thomas Bayley was born on November 5, 1926 in Grays, Essex, England and died peacefully on December 27, 2019 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 69 years Betty, daughters Liz (Doug Suarez) and Val (Doug Searle), grandchildren Jonathan Douglas (Lindsay Hunter), Ken, Alyse and Franklyn Searle and great granddaughters Bayley and Quinn. Stan earned his PhD in Physics from the University of London, and then emigrated to Canada by boat with his young wife and first daughter in 1952. He worked at NRC in Ottawa for many years before moving again in 1967 to become a professor of Biology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. After his retirement he wrote a history of the Biology Department at McMaster. He was an avid photographer all his life, and many family memories are captured by his pictures and his remarkable photo collages. Reading, concerts, travel and music filled his life. He had a wonderful sense of humour, but told terrible jokes with punchlines which he usually messed up. Special thanks to the staff of Pioneer Elder Care and the Royal Henley for their gentle care in the final years. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, January 4 at noon, with visitation from 10-12 at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St, St. Catharines (905-937-4444). If wished, donations in Stan’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society, Niagara Region or to Hospice Niagara.
