The Hamilton and Scourge National Historic Site remembers Dr. Dan Nelson. We mourn the passing of this great explorer. Dr. Nelson was the driving force behind the discovery of the two lost War of 1812 schooners. If it were not for Dr. Nelson undertaking a year of study as a researcher at the Royal Ontario Museum in 1971, locating the lost log of the British flagship HMS Wolfe in US archives, and translating its entries into a 'most probable area’ search map, the ships’ locations might still be unknown. It was this crucial detective work which enabled the success of the search efforts in 1972 & 1973. Canadians and Americans are in his debt.

Very sorry to hear of Dr. Nelsons passing .His accomplishments with the discovery of the 1812 warships Hamilton and Scourge in Lake Ontario were amazing and he will live in our thoughts as a true explorer and Canadian. We met when these photos were taken. He was very personable and we spoke for some time about the Lake Ontario wrecks. It was a true highlight of my diving career.

I first met Dr. Nelson when I was 18 years old. He became my dentist, my husband's dentist; then my parents and all my siblings.
We all loved him for his expertise as a dentist, and always keeping his costs down. Once I had a terrible toothache and he met me in his office on a Sunday afternoon to take care of it. We always loved him as our dentist and as a kind and caring human being. We were so sad when he retired.
I am so sad to see this obituary. Our deepest condolences to the family.
