Through the incredible generosity of my father-in-law many years ago, Tony and I were so very blessed to be able to build our house next door to my in-laws. Only God Himself knew it would be just what I needed in the early years of adjusting to my move to Canada. Having left the support of my own family in the states behind and not having parents of my own, my in-laws became my greatest support. Being a new mom with two babies, my highlight of each day was waking up and walking next door to have coffee with them. This became a daily ritual for years as I slowly adjusted to life in Canada. My in-laws embraced me as their own daughter and helped me tremendously with my babies. They knew exactly what I was going through as an immigrant because they both had gone through it themselves. I felt a tremendous bond with both of them as a result. I have so many memories in these early years but 3 of my favourite stand out. One day I told my father-in-law that I wanted to learn how to make sauce. The next morning I woke up to a loud knocking on the door. It was my father-in-law coaxing me to come next door. Still in my pyjamas, I followed him to the garage where I was shocked to find half of the garage floor literally covered in tomatoes. He had gotten a pick-up truck and bought bushels of left-over tomatoes from a farmer. Absolutely beaming, he made a declaration that we would be making sauce together. With Nonna in the house caring for Samuel and Esther, I spent the next 6 hours with my father-in-law learning how to make sauce. We wound up with so much sauce we could have fed his entire town in Italy! Another memory is the time I visited and Ma told me it was their anniversary. I secretly went downstairs and told my father-in-law we were going shopping. I took him to a jewelry store where he picked out a beautiful light blue stone cased in a lovely gold band. We then went and bought flowers. Arriving home, I coaxed him into putting on his best suit, which he did. While Ma waited upstairs with her eyes closed, my father-in-law came up the stairs wearing his suit, shoved the flowers and ring in Ma’s faced and said, “I love you”. Ma started crying, looked at him and said, “You mean it?”. Of course he started giggling. They kissed and had a long embrace. It was one of the most beautiful, tender moments I was blessed to witness. Among all the memories, my favourite of all is spending every Saturday in those early years at my in-laws house with Ma and Ba, Auntie Yoko, myself and the kids. The four of us immigrants together learning that being family doesn’t require shared DNA…it just requires love. Even though my in-laws didn’t have a lot in terms of material possession, they had love. It was the greatest gift they gave me and I will be forever grateful. My steadfast belief in this life is that those who live in the Lord will never see each other for the last time. With confidence I can say that I know I will see my in-laws again as they are eternally wrapped in the arms of their Saviour, Jesus Christ who is the greatest love of all.

To Tony, Romeo, Paolo and the Miele family,
I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope that you can take comfort in all the memories made over the years. I remember your Dad from the days on Vine and Trapnell....so many years ago, and from NOTL. I don't know Andrew, but I read his heart-felt post, and it certainly speaks volumes as to the type of man that Pat was as a father and Nonno especially. He obviously left his mark with his life lessons that have filtered themselves down to the grandchildren. Here's to one of the hardest working men I knew as a young boy.....R.I.P. Pat.

Grateful you and Nonna can be together again. There are too many things to thank you for; humor, prudence, work ethic, generosity, self sufficiency, and resiliency. Not to mention a few life skills including wine making, farming, pizza making, and learning to make enough tomato sauce to get us through the winter! I always missed our Sunday morning visits to Casa Leone, then a stop at the Flea Market on Welland Ave so you could buy a dozen cassette tapes of Italian folk music, maybe a pair of boots or two. I learned my math skills early from you -- remember you had me tally up all the vines we pruned for an entire week with a pencil and calculator so you could go collect from the farmer. Peace work makes the feet work! Weddings were always a blast, I got to drink as much as wine as I could if you were around, and I always had a laugh when you fell asleep in a chair in the corner by the dance floor. My Dad and uncles weren't laughing when they had to bring you home. Thank goodness you gave me that Chevy Malibu, my first taste of freedom. What was a young guy to do without a car in NOTL?
Just a few memories....so many more.
Love you,
Andrew
