Obituary of Alfred Heinrich Anders
Alfred Anders
June 18, 1938 – February 23, 2019
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden, unexpected passing of Alfred (Fred) in his 81st year on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the St. Catharines General Hospital. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Erika, son Michael, daughters Linda (Rob), Caroline (Rick) and cherished granddaughter Katelyn.
Fred was born in Wattenscheid, Germany on June 18, 1938 and at the age of 16 he ventured overseas to live with his sister Else and her family. To earn his keep, Fred started his first job in Canada working for his brother-in-law’s plastering business. Through one of his work colleagues he met his wife Erika of 60 years. In 1959, Fred & Erika married where they started their life journey in a small apartment in Grimsby. In 1962, Fred landed a job with Stelco and also purchased a small hobby farm in Beamsville with Erika’s parents. This is where he found his passion in farming. The Anders family lived together with the Niederle family until 1973 when Fred moved his growing family to his first house in Grimsby Beach for six years. Still having the farming itch, Fred moved his family back to the town of Beamsville to a small grape farm. In 1988 Fred decided to sell his farm and move his family to the city of St. Catharines. In 1991 at the age of 53 Fred was entitled for early retirement from Stelco and started his own plastering business for approximately 5 years. Fred was also deeply involved with Club Heidelberg for a number of years earning a seat on the board and known as “Outside Fred” going above and beyond the requirements, maintaining the outside appearance of the club’s building and grounds.
Predeceased by his in-laws Erhard & Anna Niederle; sister, Else (Hans) Gemiener, niece Ronni and other siblings in Germany, Heinz, Hannelore, Mia (Herbert), and Wilhelm (Annemarie).
Fred will be dearly missed by his extended family, brother-in-law Wolfgang and sister-in-law Margret, and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at St. Catharines General Hospital station 3A as well as the ER staff for their excellent care. The family will receive visitors on Saturday March 9th from 10-11am, with a memorial service at 11am at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St, St Catharines. Cremation has already taken place.
If so desired donations can be made to the Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease Foundation.
