Obituary of Maria Sorrento

SORRENTO, Maria (maiden name, Avolio)

It is with immeasurable pain and grief that our family announces the passing of our very beloved Maria Sorrento. Maria is predeceased by her devoted and loving husband, Pasquale, 2 brothers and 3 sisters and is survived by her brother Vincenzo and her loving sons Salvatore “Sammy” and Giuseppe “Joe” Sorrento.

Maria was born and raised in the medieval town of Pacentro, Abbruzzi in the Maiella Mountain Range. Mom and dad emigrated from Italy to Canada. After losing dad at a young age, she persevered as the matriarch with great dignity, spirituality, character, strength and tremendous will to continue to make a good life for herself and a better one for her children.

Mom was deeply religious, hardworking, loving, compassionate, a devoted wife, sister, aunt, great aunt and great, great aunt. She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews, family and friends.  Mom had a great capacity to forgive, to love and she was an innately intelligent person. Maria prayed and read from her bible regularly. She also had a great sense of humour and was blessed with both inner and outer beauty.

Mom had many talents. She was a seamstress and could crochet or knit the most intricate patterns replicating them from sight. Maria also had great culinary skills. She had the gift of voice and sang in the Club Roma Choir for 12 years and at St. Alfred’s Church Choir for 25 years. Maria was a devoted member of St. Alfred’s Parish since 1975 and a member of the Dioceses since 1960.  She survived and was witness to WW2.

The family would like to sincerely thank all loving staff & volunteers at Linhaven Brock Home Area and Hospice Niagara. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Kalchman and his brilliant team at the St. Catharines Hospital. Thank you to all members of the clergy and Ecumenical Ministers, particularly Jane Cocco for their ministries. Special thanks to mom’s family physician, Dr. Paul Oladipo, Nicoletta, and staff.

We will never forget and gratefully appreciate the compassion, love, prayers and support from the church, family, friends and community.
