Obituary of Maria Schumylo
SCHUMYLO, Maria (nee Styslo)
With her family close by her, Maria went home to be with her Lord on June 20th, 2018 at the age of 94. Wife of the late Wasyl (1973), she was predeceased by her parents Halyna and Petro Kocik (1973), sister Irena (2001) and son-in-law Larry Granton (1996). Maria says goodbye to her loving daughter Irene (Ron) Newton, her grandchildren Michael Granton (Aiden), Christina Granton (Andrew) and her great-grandson Rowan. Maria also says goodbye to her second family Wes and Lesley Newton, Patti and Colin Pegues and her great-grandchildren Audrey, Clark, Tessa, Nick and Katie.
Maria was born in Cykiw, Peremyshl, Ukraine and emigrated with her husband Wasyl in 1942 to Germany, working in farm labor camps, to Bradford, England in 1947 and then finally to Canada in 1952 where they settled in St. Catharines. Maria was a member of the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, the League of Ukrainian Women of Canada, and in spite of her multiple sclerosis volunteered her time to helping cook perogies and cabbage rolls for all the bazaars and fundraisers. Maria was the most loving and giving person, always with a smile and a joke, never letting any obstacle keep her down. Maria was known for her wonderful cooking, baking and dill pickles. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
A heartfelt thanks to the staff at Tabor Manor for taking such good care of her for the past five years.
