Obituary of Laurence "Larry" Condon
CONDON, Laurence Francis (“Larry”) – Passed away peacefully at Heidehof residence in St. Catharines on May 19, 2018, in the presence of family. Born in Dublin, Ireland, on Dec. 4, 1936, and raised primarily in Belfast, Larry met and married his beloved wife Barbara (1931-2010) while working in Rochdale, Lancashire, where their first two children were born. In 1965, the young family emigrated to St. Catharines, where they would soon welcome twin daughters. That summer, Larry began a 30-year career at General Motors, most of it as a maintenance foreman in the Glendale Avenue Foundry.
Larry was devoted husband of 47 years to Barbara, and loving father to Gary (Tracey) Condon, Elizabeth (David) Montgomery and Lorraine (Gerry) Saxton of St. Catharines, and Sean (Norma) Condon of Toronto. He was proud grandfather/papa to Brett, Shane, Cole and Eve Saxton, and Hannah and David Condon, all of St. Catharines. He was predeceased by his mother Kate (née Hayden; 1973), father William Condon (1945), and stepfather John McConnell (1995). Throughout his life, Larry was openly appreciative of the love and support from his late aunt Elizabeth Henderson of Dublin, and the kindness of family in Carlow, Ireland.
Larry was the eldest of nine children, including three sisters – the late Anne (Gord) Ruhloff of Mactier, Ontario; Maureen (the late Paddy) Hughes of Bronx, NY; Kate (the late Bill) Williams of Brisbane, Australia – and five brothers: Bill (Isobel) Condon of Burlington, Ontario; Tom (Patsy) Condon, John (Geraldine) McConnell and Paul (Dierdre) McConnell of Belfast and surrounding areas in Northern Ireland; Anthony McConnell of Manchester, England.
Larry and his family have been blessed by the meals, visits and help provided these past few years by his friends Eamon Grant, Mike and Pat Touhey, Ces and Joan Boyle, the late James Fitzpatrick and his family. Many thanks to all of you.
We are grateful for the support from the tireless staff and support workers at Heidehof; Dr. Rammohan in Niagara Falls; Zofia of Paramed; CCAC; Scott Stevens of Brock Innovation Group; Niagara Prosthetics; Meals on Wheels; staff at St. Catharines, Port Colborne and Welland General Hospitals.
Larry’s children invite you to pre-service visitation on Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and a ceremony of remembrance from 1-2 p.m., both to take place at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Off-site reception details to be provided at service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Larry’s name to the Niagara Amputee Association in St. Catharines, and For the Needy – Not the Greedy in Niagara Falls.
