Obituary of John "Ross" Elliott
ELLIOTT, John Ross
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Ross on October 14, 2017, in his 80th year. Cherished husband of Rose Anne (Leeder) for 54 years. Loving father of John (Sherry) of Brantford and Elizabeth (Allan) Spaan of St. Catharines. Proud Poppa of Alyssa and Kaitlyn Spaan, and Ryan and Tyler Elliott. Ross passed away peacefully, with loving family by his side, at The Stabler Centre Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines.
Predeceased by his parents Reginald and Mabel (Seens) Elliott of Kendal, Ontario, sister Annette and brother Harland. He is survived by a brother Neil (Joan) and sister Joyce (Harry) Boudreau, and many nieces and nephews.
Raised in Kendal, Ontario, he left the family farm starting his career with the Dominion Bank in Oshawa in 1955. Ross, Rose Anne and their family had multiple stops throughout Ontario before being transferred to St. Catharines in 1979 where he was the Branch Manager of the TD Bank (Pen Centre) before retiring in 1991. Following his retirement from the bank, Ross worked at the Mortgage Shopper for several years.
Over the span of his life, Ross went from being raised on the family farm with no electricity or running water and attending a one-room school house, to embracing new technology of his Apple iPad for his daily news updates and jokes sent from friends through email. He was very active in many community service clubs including the Cornwall, Kitchener-Waterloo, and London Kinsmen Clubs, The Rotary Club of St. Catharines South (Past President & Paul Harris Fellow), Probus, and serving 25 years as Treasurer of Mountainview United Church. Ross was a longtime member of the St. Catharines Golf Club. He was always ready for a good game of bridge or bid-euchre, a challenging game of Uno or Cat’s Cradle with his grandchildren, and taking long walks on the white sandy beach in Treasure Island, Florida. He chaired the first garage sale and talent auction fundraisers at his church, was a regular Rotary volunteer at the Saturday night bingos, and always looked forward to many social events. He enjoyed curling, camping, traveling, hunting, and most of all spending time with family and friends.
We wish to extend a special thank you to the caring nurses, doctors, and staff at the St. Catharines Hospital, 3A Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, and at Hospice Niagara.
In keeping with Ross’ wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held October 29, 2017, at 2 pm, on which would have been Ross’s 80th birthday, at Mountainview United Church (150 Glendale Ave., St. Catharines). Arrangements entrusted to GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME (905-937-4444). Online tributes may be made at www.dartefuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Renal Dialysis Unit Niagara Health System, Hospice Niagara, or Mountainview United Church would be appreciated.
