Obituary
Obituary of Anne Rzic
RZIC, Anne (née Gorup)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anne Rzic on January 31, 2017 in her 92nd year. Anne was the always loving mother of Lori-Anne and the devoted older sister of Theresa. Anne was predeceased by her husband Slobodan, infant son Frank, parents James and Theresa and brother in law Jack.
Anne was born in the small village of Sokolovac, Jugoslavia. As a young woman after the War, she worked first in a paper products manufacturing plant in Osijek and then later in an airplane factory located in a suburb of the country's capital city of Beograd. Later, Anne and her sister travelled to Austria where they lived and worked for 13 months before immigrating to Canada in 1955 where they were finally able to join their parents who had immigrated earlier. Wherever she lived, her language skills came in handy. She could speak Serbo-Croatian, German, Hungarian, Ukrainian and some Russian. Anne worked at the St. Catharines General Hospital for 33 1/2 years until her retirement. As a hard-working Housekeeper, she very much enjoyed the positive interaction with the people she met throughout her day. The Sewing Room put her many talents to good use. Even as a child, Anne was a talented seamstress. Certainly she missed her calling in that she was able to sketch and design outfits as well as create her own patterns. Over the years, she created many dresses, coats, shoes - first for her younger sister then later for her daughter who enjoyed wearing many fashionable and funky outfits as a child growing up in the 70s. In fact, all handiwork was Anne's forté. Mostly self-taught, Anne could also crochet and knit and embroider and she created countless tablecloths, afghans, doilies and pillows.
Anne and her husband were married at Memorial United Church. Along with her daughter, she attended there for several decades before moving to Silver Spire United Church during the 2008 amalgamation. Throughout her life, Anne was a dedicated gardener. She always had an abundant vegetable garden as well as many flowers and a grape vine trellis. Even in her later years, when a broken hip continued to cause her much pain, she was determined to carry on and no weed was left unplucked. Anne was the very definition of a good woman. She was loving, smart, kind, loyal, talented, self-less and utterly tenacious. She will be greatly missed.
Thank you to all those who provided care and expressed concern over the years and towards the end of Anne's life as well as to her daughter and sister. Your support is much appreciated.
