John Watson was loved by so many people. My father Joe Mailloux. John and dad wen on their last hunting trip together in Labrador. They were caught in a very bad snow storm and the pilot had to leave them for 3 extra days. Dad said go home John, you have a job to get back to,, just leave me here. Dad was flown out two days later, with a very bad cold.
When dad died, John came running into our family home in Tilbury. He slept in driving from St Catharines and made it just in time. I opened the front door and my Mom Ethel said well you know the way upstairs John, he gave us both a big hug, carrying his suit and 20 minutes later was driving dad's car and saying everything will be just fine
I am here. That is how I remember John. His smile and kindness. And when mom died he gave another big hug.

Finding words to express what John meant to me is simultaneously both difficult and joyful. I'm proud to share my name with my mother's brother and hope he felt I did him justice.
I cannot count the number of times John helped my Mom through thick and thin. She looked up to him and I think he leaned on her as the eldest boy and girl in the family.
My mother always spoke of John's adventurous spirit. She recalled how; as a young boy; he always wanted to get out of the classroom and into the world. He was a natural leader, both strong of opinion and caring for the people around him.
Like so many of his generation, John was given responsibility early in life when his father shipped out for the duration of World War II. He cared deeply for his sisters, something that was clearly visible who ever saw the Watson siblings together.
When I was a young teen I had the thrill of drinking Turkish coffee from a tiny cup on the bridge of a Greek freighter he was piloting through the Welland Canal. We jumped onboard as the ship rose in Lock 1 and proceeded through several more all while he mastered the unfamiliar ship as if he had been on it for years. The ship's captain never looked sideways at any of John's orders, clearly he understood his prize was in excellent hands.
My mother and father were so happy for John when he found happiness again later in life. We all shared many fine memories, singing, joking and maybe even a little drinking here or there. She cherished the beautiful carving he gifted her but I know she valued him so much more.
To Marion, my cousins Marcelle, Heidi and Lisa; to my aunts, uncles and cousins; to John's friends and all those who have missed his smile and presence these past few years; I hope you are comforted by these words and our love. Unfortunately we are unable to attend and share our memories with you.
John had a good life and he left the world better in his wake. We should all be so lucky. Fair winds, full sails, a stout mast and calm seas John. Godspeed.

My husband and I have known John through events organised by Marion, and by common friends, Gayle and Al Walz. As Marion is part of my gourmet group, I saw John as well when Marion hosted gourmet. He was always a caring and thoughtful man, a talented wood carver, and one willing to lend help where needed. We have fond memories of John. Jan Tanouye.
