Obituary of Michalina Burakiewicz

BURAKIEWICZ, Michalina (nee Ilnicki) Passed peacefully on October 25, 2016, in her 98th year, surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Jan (1991). Survived by her sister-in-law Alfreda Ilnicki, nephew Michael, niece/goddaughter Elizabeth (Terry) and her great nephew and nieces Raymond, Danika, and Lily. Predeceased by her loving brother Michael Ilnicki (2013) of St. Catharines, and her cherished sisters Anna (2000) and Marcella (2010) both of Ukraine. She will also be missed by many relatives in Ukraine and her friends and neighbours. Michalina was known as an avid gardener; her flowers and vegetables were admired and enjoyed by many. She was also a proud Ukrainian Canadian and devout Ukrainian Catholic. Her strength was extraordinary, as she survived the Holodomor, Great Depression, forced labour during WWII, and lived independently in her own home until the age of 95. The family thanks the staff at Niagara Gardens for their exceptional care and compassion over the past 3+ years. Family will receive guests at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., Friday October 28, 2016 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Panachyda will be recited at 8 pm at the funeral home. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:30 am. Interment in Victoria Lawn Cemetery will follow. Memorial remembrances to Sts. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church would be appreciated by the family.
