Obituary of Jennie Sobie
Jennie Sobie
(nee Marcov)
Jennie, the last of her family, after a life well lived, died on December 2, 2015 at Pioneer Elder Care, where she received loving care on her final journey. Jennie was born in Thorold on January 12, 1922. She is predeceased by her parents Ted and Kathleen (Oltean); sisters, Vicky (James) Walters and Helen (Mike) Perenack, adored wife of the late Anthony (Tony) Sobie and much loved mother of Laurie (Angelo) Pavan and Linde (Brian) Gobeille, Gramma to Maren, Julie and Lauren and “Jennie” to Tanya and Michael.
Jennie’s mother was from Detroit and she and Tony had many happy memories there visiting relatives and going to Detroit Tiger games at old Tiger Stadium. Many years later, they travelled out west every summer to visit Linde in Calgary, AB and Vicky in Victoria, BC, and wintered in Florida. She was a great cook and loved preparing dinners for family and friends, especially for holidays. Over the years many joyful hours were spent gardening, golfing, fishing, walking, playing cards and quilting. Jennie loved to read and passed that love on to Laurie and Linde.
Jennie graduated from Thorold High School and worked at various jobs. While at Lightning Fastener Co., working in production in the 1940’s, she took a Comptometer course in Niagara Falls, NY to allow her to work in the office. Little did she know she was on the cutting edge of technology as the comptometer was later followed by electronic calculators and computers. In later years she had her own business, La Belle Dog Grooming.
Jennie is now at peace. We would like to thank all the caregivers at Pioneer Elder Care and Dr. Lucey for taking such good care of her. In accordance with Jennie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Jennie’s Life will be held at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer Society.
